David Haigh Obituary

David Martin Haigh

May 30, 1953 ~ June 10, 2013

We lost a true friend with the sudden and untimely passing of Dave Haigh. The youngest of fifteen children raised by Leo and Ethel Haigh in Seattle, Dave attended Assumption School, Bishop Blanchet High School (Class of '71), North Seattle Community College and the University of Washington. Dave worked a variety of jobs, but found his professional calling in finance and accounting in the ten years he worked for North City Lumber in Shoreline, where he progressed from truck driver to accountant. Dave moved on from the lumber business to be one of the first employees at the City of Seattle's Office of Housing, from which he retired earlier this year as a Senior Finance Supervisor after 23 years of service. The biggest change in Dave's life, and the best, was meeting his wife, Barbara, shedding the title of "bachelor" with their marriage in October of 2000. Their life together began in Bothell, where Dave and Barb endured long commutes to work so her children could finish school with their long-time friends. As "empty-nesters," they moved to a home in Seattle's Maple Leaf neighborhood, where Dave took to gardening and cooking the same way he'd once enjoyed softball and golf...with enthusiasm. Just this year, they bought a smaller home in Olympia where they'd hoped to enjoy a less hectic pace of life as relatively young retirees. Dave even got a fishing license and was learning the "hot spots" of some of the nearby lakes. Whether it was due to coming from such a large family, or just because it was the core of his nature, Dave simply enjoyed people. He will be missed by all who had the pleasure to have known him. Dave is survived by his wife, Barbara, and her children, Emily and Kyle Wilson. Also surviving Dave are four of his brothers, Jack (Fran) Haigh, Phil Haigh, Ray (Connie) Haigh, and Greg (Sonja) Haigh; and his five sisters, Tess Haigh; Helen Haigh, CSJP; Bea (Dick) Byland; Rose (Don) Obuchowski; and Geri (Lynn) Walker. Dave will also be missed by brothers-in-law, Walton Eder, Kelvin (Jenn) Eder, and Tony Eder; and sister-in-law, Lucy Haigh; and by his nephews, nieces, cousins, and more distant relations too numerous to mention here. Dave was preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Ethel Haigh of Seattle; and by five of his brothers, Steve, Dan, Bill, Jim, and Larry Haigh. Services are scheduled for Tuesday afternoon, June 25, 2013, 1:30 p.m. at St. Michael Parish, 1208 11th Avenue SE, Olympia, WA. As an expression of sympathy, in lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be sent in memory of our beloved Dave to: http://www.bishopblanchet.org/donation.php, or by mail to Bishop Blanchet High School, In Memory of David Haigh, 8200 Wallingford Ave. N, Seattle, WA 98103. We had joy,we had fun
We had seasons in the sun.
But the hills that we climbed
Were just seasons out of time.

Thank you Uncle David for the summer(s) I spent in Seattle with you taking me places and us having fun. And thank you for always reaching out to me and reminding me that I had family. You were a terrific person and I know your Spirit is safe with God...God bless.

June 26, 2013

Our deepest sympathy to you and your family, you are in our thoughts and prayers, may the "God who comforts" all the mourning ones strengthen you and your family during this difficult time. Please be assured in the words found in Deut. 31:6 where God promise "....He will neither desert you nor leave you entirely".

I feel blessed to have known Dave for nearly 25 years thanks to our common love of sports, in this case, Fantasy Football. He also had another sports love, soccer. He told me he used to get up before 6 AM on Saturdays to watch English Premier League soccer matches. We went to a few Sounders games and were going to the US - Panama game in Seattle the day after he passed. I will always cherish our friendship and know that fall won't be the same without Dave and the fantasy football.

I met Dave (aka PeeWee) through fantasy football over 20 years ago and remained in contact even after I moved away from Seattle. I was looking forward to seeing him in August. He will be deeply missed.

Dave was a truly delightful man, with a great sense of humor. We throughly enjoyed our last visit, which was spent at the Highland Games discussing Scottish/Irish backgrounds.

He had a passion for life and his family. I believe this Irish quote captures Dave:

May you enjoy the four greatest blessings:
Honest work to occupy you.
A hearty appetite to sustain you.
A good woman to love you (Barb).
And a wink from the God above.

Best wishes Dave, in your the rest of your journey.

I met Dave while working at the Alaska Building. He was a great recounteur (Noun: A person who tells anecdotes in a skillful and amusing way.) I remember him telling about employing mud-to-the-facemasks in high school football, and relaying the story of a play he'd attended which was a tale through the eyes of a dog. He was kind when others were being mean-spirited. His advice was straight forward and honest. He took on the task of becoming physically fit and won. What a guy. I'm sorry to learn that he has left the planet at such a young age. But I am glad that he left it a little better and a little brighter. You will be missed, Dave.

You are missed, Dave. You were truly one of the kindest, most warm hearted men I knew at the City of Seattle.

Dave was a very nice man. I have good memories of him from my childhood. He was my uncle Tim's best friend and a dear friend of my father's. As a teen in shoreline I saw him almost daily when he car pooled to work with my neighbor. Always in a good mood and smiling, that is how I will always remember Dave.

Uncle Dave knew when I was having boy problems as a teen. He say they didn't deserve me or their loss. More fish in the sea. ; )
