J. Losh Obituary

J. Harvey LOSH DMD

Periodontist and Leprechaun

Passed peacefully October 9, 2012 at the ripe age of 95. Born to Mary McFarland and John L. Losh in the silver mining town of Wardner, Idaho on June 24, 1917 and raised in Gladstone, Oregon. Harvey graduated from Oregon City High School in 1936 and with honors from North Pacific School of Dentistry (University of Oregon) in 1942. He moved to Seattle in 1942, and in December that same year made an illustrious train journey to Casper, Wyoming to tie the knot with his sweetheart Marion Jean Slizeski on New Year's Eve. Harvey practiced dentistry in Downtown Seattle for over 45 years and was one of the area's first periodontists. Well respected by his peers, he was the President of the Washington Dental Society in 1972. Harvey served his country as a Major in the U. S. Air Force from 1953-1954 in Montgomery, Alabama.

In 1949, Harvey and Marion moved to Blue Ridge and raised their family in their landmark pink house, where his flair for decorating was evident in his robust and colorful light display each Christmas. Harvey was the unofficial mayor and oft times president of the Blue Ridge Club. Following Marion's passing, Harvey succumbed to the charm of a Southern Belle and married Yvonne Webb of Atlanta, GA in 2002.

Harvey loved all things Irish: He had a twinkle in his eye and an Irish sense of humor to complement his Irish temper. He marched in every St. Patrick's Day parade since his friend John Doyle Bishop painted the green stripe down Fourth Avenue, many years ago. He pleased the crowds dressed in full leprechaun regalia including pointed ears and brogues with curled toes. Harvey originated the Blue Ridge 4th of July Parade, leading each year with his Model 'A' festooned in Red, White & Blue followed by hundreds of kids on bikes and trikes. Harvey's last parades were this year at age 95.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years Marion, his parents, his siblings Grace and Stanley, his lifelong friend Charles Mulvey, and his honorary son Larry Breene, USMC. He is survived by his wife Yvonne, his 4 children, Andrea Papageorgiou (Nick), John Brian (Betsy), David (Lupe;), 9 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, his loving caregiver Patricia Vaisberg, and countless friends, including his kind friend, George Marble.

A devout Catholic and devoted member of Christ the King for 64 years, Harvey's Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, October 18th at 4 PM at Christ the King Catholic Church, 405 North 117th St, followed by an Irish wake at the Blue Ridge Clubhouse. Recitation of the Rosary will be Wednesday, October 17th, at 7 PM, at

Hoffner Fisher & Harvey

508 North 36th St. Seattle. Harvey will be interred beside his wife, Marion on Friday October 19th at 11 AM at Calvary Cemetery.

Memorial contributions would be appreciated by the Therese Mullally Losh Guild of Children's Hospital c/o 2110 Western Avenue, Seattle, 98121.

His Irish eyes are smiling!

We were neighbors of Harvey in Blue Ridge and I must say he was one of those people you can never forget. He was a hoot and a half, always entertaining with his stories and fun fun outlook on life ! He did so many wonderful things for Blue Ridge, many things behind the scenes, people didn't even know about. He was unique, he was fun, he was a great friend and we will never forget him. AND, he was Santa Claus !!!

I remember him well. He saved my teeth and gums. I unknowingly, had gross periodontal gum disease" (His words). My dentist had not recognized it. Dr. Losh advised getting a new dentist. I am now 70 years old, and thanks to Dr. Losh, I have healthy gums and teeth. RIP
