Anne Foss Obituary

Anne M. FOSS D.A.R. Member and Airplane Spotter Anne (Annie Laurie) MacLeish Foss passed away on May 13, 2011 at Liberty Common Skilled Care Center in Chatham Massachusetts where she had lived for several years. She was 92 years old. Anne is survived by her two sons and their wives; Philip T. Foss and Carol Foss of Burke, Virginia, and Charles M. Foss and Pamela Foss of Orleans, Massachusetts. She is also survived by four grandchildren (Philip James Foss of Fairfax, Va; Stephanie Anne Lamm and her husband, Jason, of Ruckersville, Va; Andrew MacLeish Foss of DeKalb, Ill; and Peter Enloe Foss and his wife, Caroline, of Tampa, Fl) and two great-grandchildren (Sarah Lamm and Nolan Lamm of Ruckersville, Va). Anne was born in Seattle, Washington to the late Charles Henry MacLeish and Emma Thompson MacLeish, but grew up in the Entiat River Valley of Central Washington where her parents owned and operated the Maxwelton Apple Ranch. Anne Foss was a graduate of Entiat High School and the University of Washington, majoring in English Literature. She was a dedicated fan of her UW Huskies, and attended their 1961 Rose Bowl victory over No. 1-ranked Minnesota. Anne was member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority, an association she maintained throughout her life. Anne was also a member of the D.A.R. and a proud descendant of Revolutionary War veteran, Enoch Enloe, and Civil War veteran, Andrew Jackson Thompson. During World War II, while her husband served in the South Pacific, Anne was an airplane spotter in the Army Air Force Ground Observer Corps. Anne was married to her late husband, Philip Theodore Foss, for over 50 years. In retirement they travelled extensively throughout the world, and lived for 15 years in Carmel, California. They previously had lived in Seattle, Washington; Birmingham, Michigan; Darien, Connecticut; and Hinsdale, Illinois. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in the name of Anne M. Dear Anne,

I will always appreciate the vital efforts you and Phil put into stopping the Hatton Canyon Freeway. Few people realize that if it wasn't for your work - we would all be driving such a silly freeway past Carmel today.

I personally greatly appreciate your numerous kindnesses for me.

Thank you,
David Dilworth
