Anne Green Obituary

Anne McKenney GREEN Anne McKenney Green, born September 17, 1935, the fourth of seven children of Joseph McKen ney and Alice Ryan McKenney, died April 1, 2011. She grew up in Boston and earned a full tuition scholarship to Boston College, her father's alma mater, where he had also served as head foot ball coach and later as president of the Alumni Association. She re ceived a BA with honors in 1957 and a master's degree in nursing in 1959. In graduate school she worked as a nursing instructor at Boston City Hospital, where she met her future husband, William Larimore (Bill) Green, a resident physician who had recently grad uated from Harvard Medical School. They married in Septem ber 1959. Their married life was spent in several locations, as Bill pursued a career in academic medicine, and Anne a career in nursing education. Anne served as head nursing instructor at Newark Presbyterian Hospital (1962-65) instructor at Washington Univer sity in St. Louis (1965-66), and assistant professor at St. Louis University (1966-69). In 1968, they were blessed with the birth of twins, a boy Thaddeus and a girl Amy. The family moved to Bellevue, Washington, where Anne devoted herself to raising her children, and had a third child, Susannah, born in 1972. Anne became active in the PTA at Stevenson Elementary and served as principal in the religious education program at St. Louise Church. She also found time to volunteer as a tour guide at the University of Washington (UW) School of Medicine and to work with the UW Medical Faculty Wives organization. During her 15 years in Seattle, Anne's favorite activities were with her family during picnics in the park, road trips to exciting places and quiet nights at home by the fire playing Scrabble or completing crosswords. Anne was also an excellent cook and loved to entertain in their home. In 1984 the family moved back to the New York City area where Bill had been appointed head of research at the Brooklyn VA Hos pital. As her children grew older, Anne returned to work as a school nurse at Glenwood and Hartshorn Elementary schools in Short Hills, New Jersey (1989-99). She soon gained the respect of her superiors and became a beloved caregiver to children and parents alike. Anne and Bill retired in 1999, and moved back to the Seattle area to be near their children and grand children. There are now six grandchildren: two each in Shoreline and Fall City, Washing ton and two more in Walnut Creek, California. Anne rejoined the former Faculty Wives group, now known as the Friends of the UW School of Medicine, served as President in 2001, and remained active until her death. Anne carried her quick wit and good humor to the end. She will be dearly missed by her family, in cluding her grandchildren ('her babies') who were the apple of her eye. She was happiest when she was surrounded by her family. In addition to her husband, children and grandchildren, she is survived by sister Joan Doherty of Boca Raton, Florida, sister Susie Powers of Canton, Massachusetts, brother Bill of Dennis, Massachusetts, and numerous nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to Friends of the University of Washington School of Medicine, UW Medicine, Box 358045, Seattle WA 98195-8045; (www.washington. edu/giving/make-a-gift; keyword 'FUWSOM'); or to a charity of your choice. A memorial service in celebra tion of her life will be held at 11 am on Friday, April 15, at St. Luke's Church, 322 N 175th St., Shoreline, Washington. When I think of Anne Green, I always see her smiling, hear her laugh, and remember her wonderful sense of humor! She was a valued neighbor, and a treasured friend. If a child ever cried out while playing in our neighborhood, Anne was always there checking to see if they had an injury that needed her care. It was so comforting for them to be tended to so carefully by Anne and then given the go-ahead to resume playing with their friends after a scraped knee or elbow was cleaned and bandaged, or perhaps simply a tear was wiped away with tenderness and caring!

Anne welcomed our young daughter into her family as if she were her own. Our parents lived far away from Washington state, and Anne became the grandmother our daughter didn’t have and longed for! She also gave me lots of good parenting advice over the years! Thank you, Anne, from the bottom of my heart!

Anne, you will forever be in our hearts and fondest memories ~ a very special lady with a heart of gold!

Heart of Gold

Heart of brilliance, heart of worth,
A gift given to the earth.

Heart of silence, heart of laughter,
Shared each day and each one after.

Heart of wonder, heart of gold,
Heart with beauty to behold.

Heart forever blessed with love,
Given by the Lord above.

Heart joined with a caring soul,
Faithful to each chosen goal.

Heart whose strength has opened doors
I am glad this heart was yours.

While I did not know Anne, I know of her kindness and generosity. She gave back to our medical students through the Friends of the School of Medicine which has made a difference to hundreds of medical students over the past 30+ years. She is a treasure and will be missed dearly by her friends here at the University of Washington.
