Bertha Appelman Obituary

Bertha "Dolly" APPELMAN Bertha "Dolly" Appelman passed comfortably, her children beside her, at Swedish Hospital on March 25, 2011. Born to immigrant parents, Ida and Isaac Roffe, on June 25, 1919, she grew up in Seattle, attending Horace Mann Elementary and Garfield High School. Her father nicknamed her "Dolly," as she was known for the rest of her life. She graduated from the University of Washington, later earning a Masters of Social Work. Most of her career was spent as a social worker in the Seattle Public Schools. In the mid-1940s, she married Milton, a cardiologist from New York. They lovingly raised three children, first in Seattle, then on Mercer Island, where she still resided. She was a Life Master at bridge. She hada lifelong passion for the arts. In retirement, she travelled the world, from Europe to Russia to China to South America. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Milton Appelman, three brothers Ben, Sam, and Harry, and a sister Mona. Services were held at the Herzl Memorial Park. She is survived by her three children, Sandra of Kirkland, Karen of Seattle, and Ira of Mercer Island. Remembrances should be sent to Northwest School For Hearing-Impaired Children.

Dear Karen, I did not know your mother had done so many wonderful things! It was nice to learn about what an active person she was throughout life. I can see from the photo that you resemble her. Love, Neva

Dearest Karen,
Thank you for talking with me this morning about your beloved Mother. I enjoyed talking about her passing, you children, and her story above. I think it is gift that you mentioned that she passed "comfirtably." I wish now that I could have met her. There are many lessons to be learned here, and I am thankful that you and I can discuss our learning of some of them together. Please call on me if there is anything you need from me at any time, Barbara Luetke
