I learned of the passing of Mr. Hartman only this morning, when I received a phone call from a close friend. The friend and I were fortunate enough to grow up in the Hartman neighborhood, and as such, we knew the family very well. They were an integral part of both our childhoods. The friend and I talked at length about those great times when we were so much younger.

When I think back to my time on the neighborhood block with Mr. Hartman, the thing I remember most about him was his involvement with the kids. He was not only involved with his own children, but he was also involved with all of us who grew up on 54th Street in North Seattle. Never was this involvement more prominent than when it came to sports, especially baseball. He did love baseball. Whether coaching the neighborhood little league team, or packing us in the family station wagon for a Rainiers Game at Sick's Seattle Stadium, he was always ready to go.

I last saw Mr. Hartman at the funeral for his wife, Doris. He looked terrific, and although he had lost a step physically, his mind was still sharp. He too remembered those great times in the local neighborhood, and I enjoyed the brief opportunity to reminisce with him.

While he lived a full and long life, it is never easy losing a family loved one. As such, my very best condolences go out to the entire family. And to Mark, Wayne, and Mary Kay, the very best prayers of Debbie and me are with you in your time of loss. Thank you for sharing your mother and father.
