Hi Dad. Just saw Paul's words here again. "I miss my Dad!" from March 2020. Paul died on August 30, 2021. I miss you Dad and Paul. None of us can really understand how all this works, but (knowing God) I'll bet you guys have had a reunion by now. Praise God!

On the anniversary of my Dad's passing, I was at least able to share a wonderful afternoon with my "2nd Mom"...a beautiful lady who graces the neighborhoods of Lake Burien. (I still truly need elderly guidance!)
What comes to mind right now, thinking of my Dad Ernie, are his descriptions of horse-'n-buggy rides to visit their neighbors...'back in the day'. Even though I was never a farmer, or a cowboy, maybe it was my father having a place deep down inside me that made me my own version of a horse-lover. Maybe for my older brother, Phil, as well...as he used to collect horses as a kid.
And, as my brother Paul said simply -- I miss my Dad!

10 years gone now. I still dream I'm having one of those casual, quiet talks with Dad that I miss so much. Phil ~

Whelp, we still miss grandpa Ernie and grandma Ruby, nothing has changed there. As I continue to grow and parent my own kids I use them as models for calm and God driven wisdom in my weak parenting moments. Grandpa was so gentle and kind, if he slightly raised his voice, usually backing up grandma on controlling our energy level or quarreling, you knew you better listen up! His predictability showed us when he meant business. He only had to say a few simple words and we listened. Then it was back to quietly observing us, feeding us, building things for us. I’ll bet a lot of talks happened in his head while he gardened because that’s what I do. I think of you when I garden grandpa and I miss you!

Dad, We've been looking at all those old pictures again. Seeing you 61 years ago holding me as your first born child brings me back to the love and security I knew as a child with you and Mom. I love you. I respect you. I miss you. Say "Hi" to Mom for me. Hope you also get to see "Otto". The big brother you never met. ~ Phil ~

Grandpa- I am building a composter just like yours. And I am already having trouble this spring with squirrels in my bird feeder. I see your postman statue in my kitchen everyday, and it reminds me of the seasons, and that you were the Gardener of the True Vine. Thank you for your kindness and gentility. As it continues to live through your son and is passed on to me, it will be passed on to mine. I love you.

Oh, how often I have thought of Uncle Ernie and how positive and upbeat he always was. Smiled through some very tough times. Will always be grateful he and Aunt Ruby took us all in (instant Aunts/Uncles of 7 children) way back in 1962 and treated us like their own. Prayers for the family. Judy Flathers

My Grandpa Ernie - had a smile that would make you feel loved. had a very unique style in his outfits - shirts tucked in nice and tight, pants up around his belly and button up sweaters to keep him warm. He had a green thumb like no one else I know. If I ever had a gardening issue (especially w/raspberries), Grandpa Ernie is who I'd call. I'm thankful to God for the friendship I had w/my Grandpa! He loves me and I love him.

Grandpa- my most poignant memory of you is how kind and quiet you were. With your reserved nature came wisdom, optimism and a great sense of humor. I knew if you had something to say it was worth hearing. I also remember how much you loved and respected Grandma. That is something that imprinted on me very deeply. My family and I will always look to your example. You were the best Grandpa! I love you!!!

I love my grandpa Ernie! He was a great man, father, and grandfather. He was gengle and kind. I have many memories of him, helping to work in his garden, yummy green beans and raspberries and cream! He made us THE BEST playhouse with a splitting door, curtains, a kitchen, and a table and chairs. I will miss your quiet presence grandpa but it's great that you are dancing in heaven with grandma Ruby! I love you!
