George Winston Obituary

Dr George WINSTON, OD "Dr. George" passed away April 2, 2011 surrounded by family, friends and caregivers. Born to Charles and Anna on the Lower Eastside of New York City. George moved to Brooklyn at a young age, played high school soccer and was the saxophone player in several musical groups. After leaving St Johns University, George traveled West and enrolled at the University of California, Berkeley becoming a Doctor of Optometry. At Berkeley George met Marjorie Fisher, of Seattle and they were married in 1943. George served in the U.S. Navy during World War II on a hospital ship in the Pacific. In 1944, he and Marjorie had a daughter Laurie, but soon after, Marjorie passed away and George became a single parent. In 1972 he married Ruth Lancaster and they embarked on a nearly forty year marriage filled with travel and fun. George loved his chosen profession and continued to study the eye well into his 80s. He had several offices around Seattle over a sixty year career. He was a staunch Democrat in a Republican Bellevue neighborhood and was a delegate to the Democratic Conventions of 1964 and 1968. He was an ardent golfer and a member of Glendale Country Club for over sixty years, serving as President and Board Member. In retirement, George went to the movies on Mondays, ate hot dogs at Costco on Tuesdays, played golf on Wednesdays and partied on the weekends. George is survived by his wife Ruth, daughter Laurie and Garry Crocker, granddaughter Jana and Scott Sleight and granddaughter Jill and Bill Leedom, and great-grandchildren, Jacob Sleight, Samantha Sleight and William Leedom. He is also survived by his nephews Joel and Neil Cohen of New York City and relatives, extended family and friends. The family wishes to extend special thanks to the Staff of the Kline Galland Home, especially East 3 and to his wonderful caregivers, Yelum and Seble, who gave him extraordinary devotion. In lieu of flowers, remembrances to the Kline Galland Center. Please note funeral services as follows: Internment at Herzl Memorial Park, 16500 Dayton Avenue North, Seattle, Tuesday, April 5 at 11:30 AM. Dear Winston Family,

Please accept my deepest sympathies. I only know too well what it means to loose a parent. Dr. George was a good friend of my father as they both did enjoy their time at Glendale. I am sorry for your loss Ruth.

Laurie: many years have gone by and I wish you and your family well.

Jana and Scott you have my sympathy as well.

My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

George was a lucky, lucky man when he found you. I've always thought of you two as the perfect pair. Please take care of yourself with the same love and care you have given to George.

Dear Larie -

As a Portland resident the last five years, I am always saddened when I don't learn directly by reading the obits.
I know my dad (Lou - deceased 2007) liked George very much. I would speculate that the last years were not particularly easy. Sorry for your loss.
(Did I know you were married to Gary Crocker? Don't think he'd know be; I just associate through Rick Leavitt.)
Hope your life is otherwise a dream.

Blessings,

Mark Rubin
