Howard Stanley ALMQUIST Born 12/9/1910 in Seattle to John Almquist and Johanna (Teninga) Almquist. He lived in the Seattle area until he went to be with his Lord on 2/3/2011. He left behind his four children, Ted (Becky), Jon "Dick"(Patty), Mary Jo Mott (Charles), and David; 5 grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Gladys (Helstrom), and his sister Vera. He was an energetic, dedicated, and generous father who believed that "any job worth doing was worth doing well" and admonished his children to "always do your best". He started a neighborhood grocery store in Ballard in 1935, and then in 1954 also established Howie's Bestway Furnace Cleaners which is now Howie's Power Vac and Innovac. At 68 years of age he became a "construction worker" volunteering with Gladys in the Mobile Missions Assistance Program (MMAP), helping construct churches, church additions, Christian camp buildings and schools. They served with MMAP for 19 years, saying "We're not retired, just retreaded". Dad traveled extensively with our mom, who started planning their next trip as soon as she left home on the currant one. Dad would likely have preferred walking the banks of local rivers fishing for steelhead, but faithfully toured the world in mom's footsteps. He had many friends and loved telling stories and poems he had learned throughout his life. He was a faithful Christian steward and an active member of the Ballard Baptist Church for 75 years. We his children and his many friends will miss him. Please sign the on-line guest book at: www.Legacy.com/seattletimes.To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.

I last remember seeing Howie when I was painting the house out at Lake Retreat. He and I walked around pretty much the whole thing; he must have been 94 or 95 then! I am sure if I asked he would have climbed up the ladder and helped. I am sorry for the loss to your family.
