R. Noe Obituary

R. Cyrus Noe

Cyrus was born on April 10, 1929 in Bozeman, Montana. He passed away peacefully at home on September 23, 2017. Cyrus had a long and colorful life with many careers. He attended both Montana State University and University of Montana with degrees in creative writing and journalism. After working in radio in New Orleans and Panama, he proudly served in the US Army where he worked in military intelligence in Germany. Upon his return to America he settled in the Northwest where he completed his PhD work in Literature at the University of Washington. He held many positions in Seattle including public relations work for the Seattle World's Fair, freelance writing, helping launch and manage the Sky River Rock Festival, criminal justice planning in the South Pacific, and many others. During the WPPS crisis in 1982, he created an energy publication named Clearing Up. This grew over the years into a thriving company called Energy NewsData in Seattle and San Francisco that covers energy issues for all western states. He retired three years ago and was very proud of his publications and the staff that continues his legacy. Cyrus enjoyed bird watching, cooking, gatherings with family and friends, and was proud that he knew all the words to his favorite songs.

Cyrus is survived by his wife of 44 years Mary and their son Nicholas (Michelle) Noe, and his first wife Billie and their children Steve (Janice), Melisande, Jon Noe, Lisa (Aaron) Gaines and a large extended family and numerous friends.

I admired his accomplishments, enjoyed his company and will smile at his memory. My thoughts and prayers are with Cyrus's family and the Newsdata staff that will, I am sure, miss him greatly.

Although I didn't know Cyrus, I heard many interesting stories about his life and family from his dear wife, Mary. She is part of the family of Sound Striders and I'm sure all who know her are sending her their condolences and best wishes during this difficult time. Walking is therapeutic at times such as this......

There is a typo in my initial comment. Cy was a "fill-in," not an "ill-in." Apologies.

When we worked together in the summer of 1959 the family movie "Darby O'Gill and the Little People" played at the Columbia Theater in Longview. The Noes attended, and I remember Cy remarking that some of the kids in the audience stared at him and his beard, perhaps wondering if he was Darby O'Gill.

I was a fledgling young reporter and Cy, teaching at Lower Columbia Junior College, was a summer ill-in at the Longview WA Daily News. He was a great mentor.
