Richard Galster Obituary

Richard W. "Dick" GALSTER Born 13 May 1930 in Seattle, WA, died in the city of his birth 3 April 2011 after a long life well-lived. Survived by his wife Marilyn, daughter Jennifer and son Martin. Richard was much beloved by his family, as well as the mountains, waters and islands he loved in-turn and spent his life among. Richard was a field geologist of the old school, who walked and touched directly the terrain he sought to understand. The science of his profession informed his spirituality: he believed in the relative insignificance of humankind and was comforted by this. His church was a high mountain meadow more than any cathedral. He was a backpacker, mountaineer, Scout leader, sailor and leader in professional societies, and utterly devoted to his wife of 60 years. He lived a life of love, joy and unfailing optimism, the force of which will buoy those who loved him always.

I remember the only time I met him - Marty came up and said - "I see you've met my dad". I jokingly said, "yes, Dick and I go a long way back". Mr. Galster looked at me and said "not that far, my name is Richard". I smile when I think of that day, Marty. He was a character.

My deepest sympathies go out to you and your entire family. Losing a dad, leaves such an ache in a person's heart. You're in my thoughts, and my prayers, of course. Karen

A childhood friend, remembering "kick the can" and baseball in the street. Many times the ball heading for Dick's folk's truck or even hitting the house.
Marilyn, Marty and Jennifer may our Lord give you peace. Dick will be missed but may memories of many past years give you comfort.
