Stephen Crary Obituary

Stephen Albert CRARY Stephen Albert Crary was born May 28th, 1938 to Marguerite and Blakely Crary in Visalia, California. Steve graduated from Stadium High School in Tacoma in 1956, and in 1960 he received a bachelors in Philosophy and from Stanford University. He went on to the University of Washington Law School, where he was a member of the Law Review, graduating in 1968. He was married to Cynthia Swain Stafford and together they had three daughters, Jennifer, Alice, and Anne. Steve served in the U.S. Army from 1960 to 1962 and was stationed in Germany, where he enjoyed a brief stint as a racecar driver. He was an attorney at Graham & Dunn in Seattle where he became a senior partner and worked until his retirement in 2004. One of Steve's great passions in life was sailing. He competed in numerous races on Puget Sound and campaigned his boats successfully in Canada, Mexico and Hawaii. His boats were first to finish and first overall on Victoria to Maui races. In addition to being an avid sailor, he was an enthusiastic basketball player. In 2002, Steve's team with the Washington Athletic Club, "The Over 55 All Stars," played in the Championship World Masters Games in Melbourne, Australia and brought home gold medals. Steve cared deeply for animals and was a supporter of animal welfare organizations as well as the proud companion of three golden retrievers. Steve passed away at Virginia Mason Hospital on July 8th after a courageous battle with PSP (progressive supranuclear palsy). During his final illness, he was lovingly cared for by Sospeter Githendu. Steve is survived by his daughters Alice and Anne and his granddaughter Jacqueline Crary. A memorial gathering will be held at the Seattle Yacht Club on Thursday, August 12th from 3 to 5 pm. Donations in Steve's name may be made to the Jennifer Louise Crary Scholarship Fund at Lakeside School, Oceana, the Humane Society or the Office of Development at Weill Cornell Medical College (in support of research on PSP).

Steve was a great skipper and boat owner, always keeping the fun factor of sailing at the forefront of every adventure on the water. It was a pleasure being on Phoenix, & JJFlash on many races around Puget Sound.

Steve was my cousin and a role model in many ways for me. My family visited his in Tacoma several times in my childhood. His athletic skills were an inspiration for my own sports participation. I followed him to Stanford and professional work. I sailed only once in my life, and that was on Lake Washington with Steve. He was a fine person, and I will miss him.

IT'S VERY DIFFICULT TO GO IN OR OUT OF MY HOUSE, LOOKING OVER NEXT DOOR WITH THE REALIZATION THAT STEVE AND VITO . . . .. . . . . . . .I MISS YOU BOTH EVERY DAY.

Steve and I got to know one another in law school. I followed him as law clerk to Justice Bob Finley and then as an associate and Graham & Dunn. We sailed together and laughed together. I miss him.

Steve was a wonderful man. I worked with him at Graham and Dunn in 1977 and I have great respect for him. Theresa Dowell Jones
