Chris Ferreira Obituary

Chris Ferreira

Chris Ferreira was born the last of 5 children by Al and Claire Ferreira on January 11, 1975, into the Hollywood blockbuster era of Star Wars, Close Encounters and Indiana Jones, spanning epics like Lord of the Rings. He fled Sacramento's wilting heat for the cold rain of his forever home in Seattle's bohemian University District with its funky theaters, groovy video stores, diverse cuisine and inviting walks. He walked a rut around Green Lake. Chris was a voracious reader and avid film buff, with a connoisseur's palate for gourmet cooking. His knowledge of films, actors and directors was encyclopedic. He was a classically trained virtuoso guitarist with an affinity for Jazz and performed with many accomplished artists. He was happiest with the rejuvenating plasma of music coursing through him. Music was his calling, his passion and his life.

Chris returned to the Wheel of Time at 39 years old on March 16, 2014, and is now teaching jazz guitar to Obi Wan Kenobi while convincing Roger Ebert that Paul Giamatti was more neurotic in Sideways than American Splendor, and haunting Mike McCarthy's dreams for neglecting the Green Bay Packers defense. Some say his spirit never left, which might explain why each morning the staff at Scarecrow Video find their Blu-Ray playing "Magnolia", while hot plates mysteriously go missing from Costa's, Red Mill, and Taste of India. Some say he isn't gone, but is living in Banff, Canada's Chinatown, cutting demo discs between hikes around Lake Louise and passing off bad checks signed "Dale Cooper" at 12 Monkeys Video, and saying "you bastards!" to pursuing RCMP. Who knows? The truth is out there. I say Chris is somewhere above, blithely lost in an everlasting jam session with Miles Davis, Charles Mingus, Charlie Parker, Buddy Rich and Thelonius Monk, writing new material for when we meet again. Heaven sounds a little richer now. We love you Chris.

It has been a long 6 years without you Chris. I am retired now. I had a lot of plans to visit you in retirement, take you back to the Space Needle restaurant and go back to Banff for a good 2 weeks. Maybe see a Mariners game if the Giants ever played them.

I would never question God's plan for us, but I'll never understand why he had to have you back so soon. He gets you for infinity. I think he could have waited a couple of decades longer to hang out with you. You beat me to Heaven, you lucky dog. Congratulations.

Still sucks for us though. It sure was unexpected. I thought you would live to be 80. You didn't smoke, drink, drink coffee or do drugs. I will always be baffled how you got cancer in the first place. Al thinks you had it in Sacramento because you always ate standing up at the sink. He thought you might have been in a little pain even then. It is too bad you didn't get your hernia in Sacramento and get early treatment for you cancer.

Life is crazy and its hard. We still love you though and miss you terribly. Oh well. God know what he is doing. I wish he would clue me in.

I am so sorry for your loss. Chris was one of the best guitarists, roommate and friend to all anyone could have. I was always wondering where he went off to after Santa Clara. I never expected he would be Jamming in heaven with the greats!!!!!

Dear Ferrieira Family,

For years I have tried to look up and reconnect with Chris but could never locate any contact info. I finally found his obituary and am so sorry to hear this news. I am sure he is and was a treasure to you, and that his legacy and memory lives on. I am a former band member and friend of Chris's from SCU. Our band broke up after my life fell apart when my Dad died then. I remember Chris as one of the coolest and friendliest guys, and I am so thankful I had the opportunity to play bass with a musical genius. I'm so sad that most our practice recordings we're lost during a move. I could listen to him play for hours! I figured you might want to hear from another devoted fan and friend of Chris. He will live on in my heart and mind as a treasure. Prayers for your family. Please feel welcome and free to contact me at [email protected]

Chris was not only an inspirational guitarist, and a great friend, but also the source of the funniest commentary anyone who knew him ever heard. His nutty stories (usually self-deprecating) will always remain with me, and I often catch myself smiling just thinking of them.

He was one of my favorite musicians to play with. The guy had the tastiest chops this side of the Mississippi, and he taught me a lot about when to play and when to sit out. Not only could you tell music ran in his veins, you could see it on his face and hear it in his voice every time we jammed, when you'd hear a random "YEAH!!" from him while the music played.

I had no idea Chris was sick, and I'm really saddened to find out he is gone. I hadn't spoken with him in nearly a year, and I'll always kick myself for losing touch. I'll miss him.

I didn't know Chris, but I saw his obit in the Seattle Times. It's one of the best I've ever read. Peace to those of you who did know him.

He was my best source for book and movie recommendations and now I have to do my own homework. I am about 6-7 years to retirement, and I planned to take him back to Victoria, Vancouver and Banff after I retired. I planned to visit him a couple of years or so. So my life is definitely going to be less fun with Chris gone. Not that it matters. And of course pales compared to what our Mother is going through. Chris should have had more time here to enjoy and to do what he wanted to do. So much music left unplayed.

I just can't get used to him being gone. For the most part, he was "out of site out of mind", but I always knew he was out there somewhere and I thought of him often, wishing I could wave a magic want and make him better -- make his life all better. Now, he is not out there anymore and I just can't get used to that fact. I miss him so much. He was my baby brother and I still see him playing with Star Wars toys, watching the Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoons, and burning through books like no tomorrow.

I miss you so much Chris! I love you so much!

I loved taking my grandson Ryan Townsend to guitar lessons with Chris years ago when Chrislived at the north end of the U District. He had a special way of connecting through guitar lessons with an elementary school boy...

I will miss dinners with he and Mark as they yammered on ceaselessly about this movie and that. I will miss his wildly absurd sense of humor. I will miss his music. He brought so much joy and comfort into our lives when we needed it most.
