Meade Hargiss Obituary

Meade Thomas Hargiss, Jr.

Meade Thomas Hargiss, Jr. - also known as Tom - was born April 11, 1919, in Pittsburg, Kansas and passed away on September 15, 2015 in Bellevue, Washington. His exposure to speech-sound notation in seventh grade and beginner's Latin in eighth grade ignited a lifelong interest in comparative languages and literature. The family moved to Seattle in 1930, and Tom graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1936. At 23 he entered the Army Air Corps. In 1945, he married Clarice Osterud, a student at the Yale Nursing School. Days after the wedding he was sent to northeast India as a flight controller. His expertise in planes would land him a job at Boeing after the war, but his passion would always be linguistics, which he studied at Yale on the GI bill. His family never could tell how many languages he had studied, since he continued to surprise them with his knowledge of dozens of languages. After Clarice developed dementia, Tom took good care of her at home for seven years before she had to be moved to an assisted living facility. She passed away in 2004. Tom is survived by his children, Peggy Price (Jim), Kathleen Sidwell (Jerry), and Leonard Hargiss (Debbie); his grandchildren Glenn (Andrea), Eileen (Phil), Kim (John), Ben (Karen), Miriam (Justin), Josh (Vicki), Nicholas and Spencer; and his great-grandchildren, Aubrey, Zach, Faye and Inara. He is also survived by his brother, Dr. James Hargiss (Helen), and nephews, Phil (Lee), Craig and Reid.

The family wishes to thank Merrill Gardens - Renton Centre where Dad lived for seven years, Helen Valdez' elder care program, and the Garden of Eden AFH in the Kennydale neighborhood for all their care of and affection for our dad. A memorial gathering will take place at Merrill Gardens - Renton Centre. Please contact the family for day and time.
