Myron Eugene Warnick
Dr. Myron Eugene Warnick, age 82, passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, May 26, 2016 after an extended illness.
Myron, a first generation Canadian, was born in Rosthern, Saskatchewan to Eugene and Mary Warnick. Myron's father and paternal grandparents emigrated from the Ukraine to Saskatchewan in 1914 in an effort to escape the growing tensions of pre-WWI Europe. The family was lured to the prairie provinces of Canada by the promise of homesteading and the likeness of the area to their homeland.
Myron's love and appreciation of learning was instilled at an early age. The son of two school teachers, Myron spent his early childhood years in the classrooms of his parents who taught grades K-12 in a two-room school house in Rosthern. When not in his parents' classrooms, Myron could often be found with his nose in a novel or comic book somewhere on the family farm.
Myron graduated from high school at age 16 and headed off to further his education at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. In 1955 at age 22, Myron graduated first in his class from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry and a Doctorate of Dental Surgery.
After graduation, Myron began his dental practice in Edmonton where he practiced for two years. Longing for the halls of academia where he could continue to pursue his passion for learning and teaching, Myron moved to Seattle in 1957 to take a position as an instructor in Restorative Dentistry at the University of Washington.
Soon after arriving in Seattle, Myron and several of his former University of Alberta classmates formed the Vancouver Society of Restorative Dentistry. Myron made the northern trek from Seattle to Vancouver on a quarterly basis for nearly 5 decades to mentor young dentists, lecture on restorative dentistry, and to share in the camaraderie of lifelong friends.
In 1959, Myron was promoted to Associate Professor (with tenure), and to Full Professor in 1961. Soon after, Myron opened his private practice; however, his true passion was teaching and mentoring dental students at the University of Washington which he did for 52 years until his retirement in 2009. He wrote teaching manuals for pre-clinical, clinical, and laboratory courses - some of which remain in use today. In 2008, he received the Bruce R. Rothwell Lifetime Achievement in Teaching Award.
Myron was also an avid fisherman. He frequented Westport for salmon fishing excursions. If he was not catching kings at Westport, he was headed north, making the annual pilgrimage to Janice Lake with several of his study club members known affectionately as the "Looney Birds". In 2009, The Looney Birds celebrated their 50th anniversary of the Janice Lake trip. Though Myron was not always able to make the trip - he was always there in spirit.
Myron loved to travel. He and Nola, his wife of 22 years, frequently traveled up and down the west coast and to Hawaii and Mexico, creating many wonderful memories. In 1989, Myron and Nola purchased a motor home, which provided many road-trip adventures to places such as: Mount Zion, the Grand Canyon and Bryce Canyon.
Myron will be remembered for his abilities as a teacher, mentor, and clinician. He was the consummate storyteller and master of delivering jokes. He will be deeply missed.
Myron is survived by his sister Irene, his children: Ronald Warnick (Ana), Richard Warnick, Roberta Warnick, his step-daughters Jacqueline Coulter (Dave), Michelle Chartier, his step-son Richard Chartier, and his grandchildren Katarina, Keelin, Kevin, Peter and Dylan.
