Harry Matthews Obituary

Harry "Kid" MATTHEWS was born in Emmett, Idaho, on December 9, 1921, and passed away in Escondido, California, February 21, 2003. Harry was a world boxing contender in three weight divisions from 1939 to 1955, fighting such notables as Ezzard Charles, Bob Murphy, Al Hostak, and Rocky Marciano. Harry holds the world record for the longest winning streak of all time with 200 wins, and four losses as noted in The Guiness' Book of Records. Harry was a World War II Veteran who served in the Phillipines. Harry owned and operated three successful businesses in his illustrious career and was married three times to Donna, Josie, and Delores. He is survived by five children, daughter and son-in-law Patsy and Ken Cowin, Menifee, CA.; daughter Connie O'Keeffe, Oceanside, CA.; son, Ron Bergstrom, Everett, WA.; daughter and son-in-law Debbie and Loren Patchett, Everett, WA.; and daughter, Carol Hill, Huntington Beach, CA.; nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and many nephews and nieces. A private service was held in Oceanside and burial in Everett, WA. Remembrances can be made to the Disabled American Veterans, P.O. Box 14301, Cincinnati, Ohio, 45250-0301.

Through his daughter Connie we met Harry Kid Matthews late in his life. His demeanor was as always quiet, not self serving and still showed he was confident in his abilities whether boxing or business. We enjoyed our short time with him.
