Calvin Otten Obituary

Calvin Otto Otten, 83, of Sedalia, died Saturday morning, April 4, 2009, at Western Missouri Medical Center in Warrensburg.

He was born Sept. 7, 1925, in Florence, a son of Aubrey Otto and Pearl Marie Cramer Otten. On May 27, 1949, he married Laverne Bullard, who survives of the home.

Calvin and Laverne owned and operated Otten Small Engine. He started the business in his garage in Otterville in 1972, moving the business to Sedalia in 1978. Prior to that he worked for 19 years as the parts manager at Adams Truck and Tractor International Harvester in Sedalia, and for seven years as store manager at Bixler Gas Company in Tipton. He held a U.S. Patent for a small engine test brake, which measures engine torque. He was a member of Mt. Herman Baptist Church. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Yvonne Marcum, and her husband, George "Butch", of Blue Springs; two sons, Ron Otten, and his wife, Sandy, and Mark Otten, and his wife, Gay, all of Otterville; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a sister, Helen Darby, of Sedalia; two nieces and one nephew.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Lee Otten; and a nephew.

Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Heckart Funeral Home, with the Rev. Bob Wasson officiating.

Pallbearers will be Benji Marcum, Matt Otten, Jon Marcum, Uriah Otten, Isaiah Otten and Tom Otten.

Honorary bearers will be Molly Nussbaum, Lydia Otten, Erica Rennison and Dara Pacheco.

Burial will be in Highland Sacred Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Heckart Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions are suggested to Mt. Herman Baptist Church.
