Vera Davidovich Obituary

Vera (Golubovich) Davidovich April 26, 1926 - October 8, 2011 With faith, dignity and her family at her side, Vera passed away, ending her decade long battle with Alzheimer's. She was born in Podgorica, Montenegro to Veljko and Vidosava Golubovich. She grew up in Podgorica, Bitolj, and Sarajevo, Yugoslavia. During World War II, Vera lost her beloved father. She also was a survivor of the Nazi concentration camp at Stara Gradiska. After the war ended, Vera, along with her mother and two brothers, Milorad and Predrag, lived in Podgorica, and then Belgrade, Serbia. In 1954, she met her future husband, Jefto, while on vacation in Petrovac Na Moru. They married later that year and in November of 1955, with their 4 month old son, Stevan, immigrated to San Francisco to begin their new life. Jefto was soon employed by Pan American Airways and their second son, William, was born shortly thereafter. The family spent almost every summer traveling back to Yugoslavia, visiting relatives and staying in Petrovac Na Moru. Vera's love of travel took them to the USSR, Hawaii, the Caribbean and many other countries throughout Europe and around the world. Vera's education came to an abrupt end as World War II came to a close. She immediately went to work to support her family and had to put her education on hold. While not speaking a word of English when she came to the US, it didn't stop her from getting a job. She began by working as a sales rep for Avon cosmetics, where she eventually was promoted to District Manager until her retirement. However, her passion for lifelong learning and obtaining a college education never subsided. She enrolled at City College of San Francisco in 1975 and obtained her AA Degree in Journalism in 1977. She then immediately enrolled at San Francisco State University, where she graduated in 1980 with her BA in Journalism, at the age of 54. She was proud to work as a part time reporter for the Portalwood Press for several years. Vera was a faithful parishioner of St. John the Baptist Serbian Orthodox Cathedral since coming to San Francisco. She was an active member of the St. Sophia Sisterhood, serving as President for many years. She was also elected as President of the Western Region Circle of Serbian Sisters, where she served in this role until 2002. She was also a member of the Eastern Star and the Daughters of the Nile. Family was one of the most important parts of her life and she dedicated her life to her family. She was particularly thrilled to become a Baba and loved to spoil her grandchildren. She enjoyed entertaining and always welcomed guests to her home with a huge hug and kiss. Family always came first in her life and she was heartbroken by the death of her youngest brother, Predrag, and mother, Vidosava, in 1994. Vera is survived by her loving and devoted family, husband of 56 years, Jefto, sons Stevan (Patty) and Bill (Alicia), brother Milorad (Teresa) Golubovich, sister in law Brana Golubovich, nieces Snezana Golubovich and Liliana (Branko) Perazich, nephews Paul, Srdan and Mladjan Golubovich, grandchildren Jerome (Amy), Stephanie, Alexander, Philip, Nicholas, Liliana and Alexandra Davidovich, great nieces Elena, Cristina and Anya, and great nephews Luka and Balsha. Friends are invited to attend the Memorial/Pomen service 7:00 PM, Friday, October 14 at HALSTED N. GRAY-CAREW & ENGLISH, 1123 Sutter St. SF, and the funeral service 11:00 AM, Saturday, October 15 at St. John the Baptist, Serbian Orthodox Cathedral, 900 Baker Street, SF with interment immediately following at the Serbian Cemetery in Colma.
