Theodore Dankmeyer Obituary

T. Rognald "Roggie" Dankmeyer

March 15, 1938-September 21, 2015

Roggie was born in Baltimore, MD where he developed a lifelong love of all games, sports and outdoor activities. He attended the Gilman School and Williams College where he graduated in 1960. During his final year at Harvard law school he met Juliet Cooper, and the couple married in 1963. After living briefly in Baltimore, Juliet and Roggie moved to Washington, DC where Roggie worked as an Associate at Covington and Burling and where his two daughters, Ingrid and Erica, were born. The family then moved to Los Gatos, CA in 1973, where he worked for General Electric's Nuclear Division. They relocated to San Mateo in 1981 when he became General Counsel for BHP Utah International in San Francisco. His work included much international travel and negotiation of complex business deals.
Although he relished the world travel and challenging career, Roggie elected to take early retirement at age 60 to devote all of his considerable energy to hiking, biking, tennis, camping, skiing and golf, and to travel with Juliet. He also enjoyed spending time at the cottage in Carmel that they purchased soon after they moved to California.

Roggie died peacefully in Burlingame on September 21, 2015 due to complications from Alzheimer's disease. He is survived by Juliet, Ingrid Dankmeyer of Battle Ground, WA, Erica Dankmeyer of Williamstown, MA, five grandchildren, and his two sisters: Anne Hopkins of Baltimore, MD and Gretchen Edwards of Denver, CO.

The entire family would like to extend grateful thanks to the always cheerful and caring staff at the Burlingame Villa, as well as to the nurses of Carelink Hospice Services for their remarkably able care. His life will be celebrated by his family in private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or to a charity of choice.

Roggie was to me a most loyal, as well as intellectual, in house counsel, while I was outside counsel retained to advise BHP Billiton. He used to call me up and ask for a legal opinion, but he would ask me to give it in a day or two, after I "noodled it around", even though I thought I could then provide the answer. But as I thought about the problem, my answer was often not what it woulds have been on the day he asked the question. He was indeed very wise.

Dear Juliet,

I am so sorry for your loss. I remember when I was visiting ophthalmology programs in your area and Roggie and you were so generous to let me stay with you in your beautiful home and to show me around town. Roggie passed away almost 6 months to the day after my father and I know they are having a wonderful time reuniting in heaven. I had a lot of down time with Dad during his last several months and Roggie's name came up many times. He was an amazing lacrosse player and friend and Dad thought the world of him!! My thoughts and prayers are with you.
