James McCloud Obituary

James Ferdinand Andreas Mccloud Jim McCloud passed on peacefully of natural causes at age 92 on the evening of December 2, 2010 in La Verne, California. James Ferdinand Andreas McCloud was born in West Oakland, California on July 2, 1918. In Oakland he attended Cole Grammar School, Lowell Jr. High and McClymond's and St. Mary's High Schools. He attended Stanford University and upon graduating in 1941 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering went to work at the Richmond Shipyards for the Kaiser companies building Liberty ships. It was here that he met whom he referred to as "that black haired beauty" who was to become his loving wife of 54 years, Geneva (Gus) Edgar. Other than a brief stint with Pacific Bridge Co. in San Francisco he spent his entire working career with Kaiser. Following the shipyards he moved to the Kaiser-Frazer Willow Run plant in Michigan. In the mid 1950's he took the family and went to Argentina for the formation of Industrias Kaiser Argentina of which he became President. He returned to Kaiser's Oakland offices in 1972 and retired in 1983 at the age of 65 as President of Kaiser Engineers. He volunteered much of his time for many non-profit organizations such as Mercy Care, the Catholic Diocese of Oakland, St. Mary's College, the University of Santa Clara, Providence Hospital, the Oakland Coliseum and the U.S.S. Potomac Association. He received a Papal Honor in 1964 and was made a Knight of St. Gregory by Pope Paul VI. He was also a Knight and Geneva a Dame of the Order of Malta. During retirement Jim and Gus would follow the seasons and spend half their year in Argentina and half in the US. He spent time fly fishing and restoring cars. He was a member of the Jockey Club in Buenos Aires, the Pacific Union Club and the Claremont Country Club. "El Jefe" (the Boss), as his four sons referred to him, was a loving and devoted husband, the greatest father in the world and a loyal friend to many. El Jefe was an uncomplicated man -- a "straight shooter". He would always remember everyone's name, although when asked about this gift he would say it just did not come by itself but he had to work hard at it. He led his life in the same way, by working hard to achieve a goal. He strived to have a wonderful family, many great friends and to do well at work. And he succeeded. He would tell his four boys, "If you end up digging ditches for a living, make sure they are straight." One of his sons was once introduced to a man who asked if he was any relation to Jim McCloud. When his son replied yes, the man then said, "if you were alone in a dark alley and could only have one person there with you, that person would be Jim McCloud." El Jefe was in that dark alley with his family and friends whenever they needed him. Jim was predeceased by Gus in 1999. He is survived by his four sons, Kimball, Kelly, Mark and James; two daughters-in-law, Claire and Marcela; eight grandchildren, Casey, Ashley, Christopher, Paul, Geneva, James, Scott and Cameron; and two great-grandchildren, Drake and Lucia. Mass will be held on Saturday, December 11th beginning at 11:15 am at St. Theresa Catholic Church, 30 Mandalay Road, Oakland, California 94618, Ph. (510) 547-2777, with one half hour of viewing prior to the Mass. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to St. Theresa Catholic Church. Arrangements by Grant Miller - John Cox Mortuary, 2850 Telegraph Road, Oakland, CA, (510) 451-6434.

Jim was a close friend for some 73 years. We met at Stanford and were both enrolled in Mechanical Engineering, though I was a year ahead of him at school. In recent years, after I had retired from Kaiser Steel, I had the privilege of serving as a consultant to Kaiser Engineers, working closely with Jim. He was one of the most decent and straight-forward people I have ever known. It was such a privilege to have known Jim ant have had him as a friend. I am so pleased that, thanks to daughter-in-law, Claire, I was able to talk with Jim on the phone a week before he went. Barbara and I send our prayers and sympathy to Kim, Kelly, Mark, Jimmy, Claire, and to the rest of Jim's loving family.

To me im was a man of deep faith and a gentleman to the core. I always looked forward to seeing him at Knights of malta gatherings be it at Lourdes, San Francisco, Oakland. It is no exaggeration to say that because of him WW2 was shortened. Fr. John Kavanaugh

My grandfather and Jim McCloud went on that extraordinary journey from the Richmond shipyards to Kaiser-Fraser to IKA together. I was just a kid in our Argentina days, but "Mr. McCloud" was always a part of our family myths and stories and sense of why we were growing up in that astonishing place. Last summer I read correspondence between those two men from grandpa's archives and I was so struck by the respect and intelligence and friendship in Jim McCloud's letters. He was a fine, fabulous man. I am glad to think that when he passed over he re-met my grandfather and father who cared for him, respected him, deeply. I wish you peace and comfort in knowing that your father will always be part of many of our favorite memories.

Its been a long time since I have seen any of the IKA crew, but the Argentina experience is one of the best of my life. I knew Jim McCloud at age 11, when my Dad, Bill Heard, moved us to Buenos Aires in June of 1955. I saw him save my brother's life, when he noticed that Neal had fell into the McCloud's pool and was sinking to the bottom. Jim deftly slid into the pool an retreived two year old Neal from the bottom and set him on the side of the pool. Neal hadn't even had enough time to inhale any water.

Jim was my father's role model. My Dad thought he was the smartest man in the world. And they made an excellent team and prospered.

Jim has a very good and complete man and the world needs many more like him.

I set here in BA and so many great memories flood my mind. My Mon and Dad love Jim because he was such a great friend and a great person to work for and with. "A great Boss ".

What a life he lived, I am so happy I got to know him. He has now joined all of the people from IKA and I know they are having a good time.

I never met Jim until a 1997 reunion of Academia Arguello, in Dearborn. My parents always spoke very highly of him, and he spoke very kindly of my deceased Dad when we met. I have read Jim's book on IKA, and believe Jim's life had a great impact on the world around him. Best wishes to la familia del Jefe.

I admired Jim greatly. One of my favorite memories is, after working one Saturday morning in Kaiser Center, having Jim drive Edgar Kaiser and me up Broadway to Claremont CC in one of his beautifully restored, open-air, antique cars (a Packard, I believe). Jim, as much as anybody I know, personified the integrity, loyalty, and can-do spirit of the Kaiser organization. My sincerest condolences to all in the family.

I am one of many children who came and went through the doors of the Academia Arguello. Though I never met Jim, I heard of him often with great respect. His name never left my memory. My condolances to his family you lost a treasure whose ripples went far.
