Louis Coyne Obituary

Louis W. Coyne Passed away peacefully from pancreatic cancer on March 17, 2006 at home in San Francisco. Family, friends and caretakers were at his bedside. Born at French Hospital in SF on May 4, 1937, he grew up in SF but spent many of his summers at his family's Foppiano Vineyard in Healdsburg. He graduated from St. Ignatius High School, obtained his law degree from the Golden Gate University, a business degree from Santa Clara University, and his MBA from UCLA. His first love was the world of finance and he went to work for Fannie Mae (Federal National Mortgage Association) in the early 1960's. He later started his own mortgage companies, Coyne Mortgage and Guardian Mortgage. At the same time, he had the "Tippy Taco" franchise in Washington, DC. In the 1990's, after leaving the mortgage world and moving back to SF, he started Nordan Inc., a financial consulting company. While traveling across the States and doing contract work for the Resolution Trust Corporation he met Michael and Charles King who were in the process of starting up Kings' Caribbean Coffee in St. Croix, the Virgin Islands. He invested in Kings' in 1997 and took up residence in St. Croix as chief operating officer in 2000. Although residing in St. Croix until shortly before his passing and having lived in many different cities, SF was always home. An outdoorsman, he enjoyed backpacking, skiing and traveling to faraway lands. He was also a passionate reader, who devoured over 100 books a year. He is preceded in death by his parents, Dan and Norma "Foppiano" Coyne; and his wife Tina Walls Coyne. He is survived by his uncle Louis J. Foppiano; and many nieces, nephews and cousins of both the Foppiano and Canata families. He will also be remembered by hundreds of friends he knew throughout the mainland United States, Puerto Rico, St. Thomas and St. Croix, USVI. A Mass of the Christian burial will be celebrated at Most Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, 100 Diamond St, SF at 10:30 am on Friday, March 24, 2006. Afterwards a Memorial Service will be held at the Neptune Society Columbarium at 1 Loraine Court, SF. In lieu of Flowers please feel free to make a donation to the American Cancer Society or to Santa Clara University.

I first met Lou in St. Thomas, so many years ago, when I was brought onboard to Kings' Caribbean Coffee by one of our very dear, mutual friends Jade Pratt. Lou trusted me to run one of his stores and he became one of my biggest supporters, both professionally and personally. I hope my contributions to the company made him proud of me. I always loved to see him, which unfortunately ended up to be not too often. And I especially delight remembering the time we were both living on St. Croix and had many a martini meeting brainstorming how to grow Kings'. I don't know what we'll do without him. Lou, I'm sorry I didn't get to say good bye to you. With every Murphy's Million Dollar Coffee I'll toast to you,

With love,

Sarah

My stepfather Bill Shaw worked for Lou, many years ago in the 70's, first, at Tippys Taco House, then later in California with the mortgage company. Lou was the reason we moved across the country (all in the name of learning the restaurant business) and eventually landed in beautiful northern California at the place Lou owned on the lake, a small little resort/bar in need of some care when my stepfather needed a break from the rat race. Eventually my parents Bill and Joyce Shaw both did some work for Lou while in California. I remeber going to the Foppiano vineyards many times for cases of wine with my parents(my favorite was always the Petit Sirah) and seeing Aunt Roe and the wippet dogs that were a mainstay. One of my fondest memories was when Lou came up to Clear Lake on my 15 th birthday and took the family out for dinner at Bernards, the fanciest place in the county, we tried escargot (snails), and cherries jubilee, but the most special part was the bottle on 1964 Chateau Lafite Rothchild he picked out in honor of my birthday,(they were out of the 1962, the year I was born). In California at that time minors could be served with their parents present or maybe they just bent the rules for Lou, but I was served. From coast to coast I remember a man of smiles and smarts, who never acted like he had any disability, only ability in life. I like to look on his life as a gift, and his passing as a change in how we see and hear him, not any more with our eyes, but with our hearts, and I like to remember that it is not the number of breaths we take, but the moments that take our breath away. His life was full of those moments, joyous and wonderful. God Blessed Lou and Lou blessed those he befriended. We, your family and friends will remember your courage and heart always.
