Betty Gardiner Obituary

Betty Davis Gardiner Betty, 90, died peacefully at home in S.F. on Nov. 3, surrounded by family and caregiver and companion Chantal Mussard. Born Elizabeth Clark Davis in Walla Walla, WA, on April 11, 1920, to Whitman professors William R. Davis and Edith B. M. Davis, Betty earned a BA in English from Whitman in 1941, and MA in Theatre & Drama from Columbia University in 1947. She taught Speech and Drama at Lewis & Clark and Portland State Colleges from 1948-1960. In 1950, she married newspaperman Llewellyn Gardiner in Portland, who preceded her in death in 1964. In 1967 she moved her three children to S.F., starting a manuscript editing business which she pursued for over 35 years. Betty was spirited, adventurous and witty-a lifelong teacher and learner. Clients valued her exceptional skill. An avid sports fan, she followed tennis and local teams. Betty cultivated life-long friendships, nurturing them until her last days. Her bright eyes and ready smile will be sorely missed and she will be remembered always for her graceful and loving life. Betty is survived by her children, Jo Gardiner of Honolulu, Ann Metcalfe of Juneau, AK (Mac), Edward Gardiner of Wasilla, AK (Michele), step-daughter Karen Hopper of Nanaimo, BC (Ron), and 12 grandchildren. A celebration of Betty's life will be held Nov. 21, and her ashes buried with her husband in Portland in a ceremony planned for 2011. Please contact Jo Gardiner for details at 415-864-1893 or 808-542-0541.

I turned on my Blackberry this morning and read the news about Betty. I started to cry immediately, even though I haven't seen Betty in who knows how many decades. So many adjectives come to mind - bright, warm, loving, courageous, a survivor, nothing phony about her. Her memory should be a blessing to her family and all who knew her.

Betty--All these decades after you left Portland, we kids still remember your laugh more than anything--it was the BEST! You rose to the occasion with your fabulous kids when Lew was taken so unexpectedly--I'll always remember your kids and us kids inner-tubing down Mt. Hood to the latest music craze at the time--the Beatles! I treasured getting to keep in touch with you on my trips to the bay area in the 20some years ago. Portland news quite honestly has never been the same since Lew left, and the world will never be quite the same now that you have ascended. I rejoice that you are back with Lew! Thank you for the grand memories! With greatest love and affection,
