Charles Friel Obituary

Charles Patrick Friel Died peacefully at home surrounded by his family on October 18, 2010, one week after it was discovered that his melanoma had unexpectedly returned. He was 88 years young. Plumber, poet, philosopher, spiritual seeker, Charlie taught us how to live with his sense of curiosity, wonder and awe. He will be deeply missed by all who loved him and whose lives were touched by his luminous spirit, joyous laughter and abundant love. Predeceased by his wife and soul mate of 57 years Dorothy Leona (nee O'Beirne), with whom he shared an extraordinary love; beloved son of the late Charles and Hannah Friel; treasured father of eleven: Kathy Stannard-Friel (Don), the late Denise Hanson (Robert), Charles Jr. (Ploen), Michael (Margie), Tom (Kitty), Jimmy (Lela), Brian (Rachel), Mary Anne, Margaret Allen-Friel (Steve), Theresa Wood (Robert) and Christine; loving grandfather to Rachel, Matthew, Sean, Jessica, Jamie, Brian, Elissa, Ericka, Carrie, Megan, Haley, Jack, Aaron, Carmen, Nicholas, Gabriel, Melissa and Shannon; loving great-grandfather to Kaia, Drew and Bella Denise; devoted brother to the late Mary Bergman, Anne Mailey, Jack and Danny Friel; Charlie is also survived by many cherished nieces and nephews. Family and friends are invited to attend Funeral Services at St. Teresa of Avila Church at Connecticut and 19th streets in San Francisco on Saturday, October 23rd. The viewing will start at 9:00 a.m., the Funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m., reception in the church hall from 11:00 to 1:00. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in Colma. Charlie was the best exemplar that we ever met of a father, husband, friend. Would that we all do life so well. God blessed him and Charlie blesses us all. Any family that is hurting can call on Charlie and Dorothy to have them ask the Lord for the help they need. The Lord will listen to them.
