I met Harold when I signed up to volunteer on the steam tug Hercules.I had no idea anyone could possess so much knowledge of San Francisco Bay history. It was a pleasure to have known the man and he will surely be missed by everyone he touched in this life.My condolences go out to his family and friends.

Harold was the " Captain of his Ship", an inspiration and mentor, who guided me in the stewardship of "Freda". His kind, gentle ways were a great influence, a smile on my face, and a deep gratitude that I knew him. I will miss him,.

I know of no one who was as great a friend, teacher and mentor to so many as Harold Sommer, a mariner and artist of the first water, a walking repository of maritime history - and the greatest, kindest single influence on my life short of my own father.
No one in my wide travels has taught so many shipwright skills, helped so many get good jobs, introduced the numbers of master craftsmen to those wanting to learn. Harold was an irreplaceable friend and inspiration to an awful lot of people. I'm sure I'm just one of many who deeply miss the guy! My sympathies to the rest, and especially to his family.

I guess the greatest folly of all is not to realize how much you love someone until they're gone. I love you Harold, I admired you more than you knew, and I miss your stories. I am glad you will not suffer, but it is so hard for our hearts left behind.

It is hard to believe that he is gone. My prayers go out to all of his family. He was a kind man with many talents, and he shared his knowledge and time freely. He touched people from San Francisco to Martha's Vineyard to Germany, and I'm not sure that he truly understood the difference he made in this world. Harold, sail gently into the setting sun. I will miss you very much.
