John Bruzzone Obituary

John Anthony Bruzzone Patriarch and heart of the Bruzzone family peacefully passed away at his home "Rancho Don Bosco" in Santa Cruz, California on June 30, 2010. He was 91 years old. John was born and raised in Oakland, California, with his sister Dena, brother Angelo, and his three cousins. As a boy, John enjoyed many summers working ranches in Livermore and entertaining his family and friends with his accordion and charm. John met his wife Julie Alezeri in Santa Cruz while they both worked at F.W. Woolworth's on Pacific Avenue. They moved to Oakland then to San Jose and together raised their three children, Jeanette, Joyce, and John Jr. John and Julie celebrated 56 years of marriage before she passed away in 1996. On June 23, 1944, John enlisted in the United States Army and served in the South Asiatic-Pacific Campaign during World War II. He fought in the Battle of Okinawa, the largest amphibious assault in the Pacific War, and received a Purple Heart. After being wounded he was transferred to Honolulu, Hawaii and served as a translator for the Italian prisoners of North Africa before returning home to his family. John was an excellent businessman who developed many companies, starting in 1947 with The Pied Piper Exterminators, Western Roofing Supply, and most recently Hollister Motor Sports, which are all operated by his family. John was driven and had a passion for land and development. In 1974, he purchased the Roberto-Sunol Adobe in San Jose, which he extensively and carefully restored. The Adobe became a California State Historical Landmark #898 on March 18, 1977. He was one of the first recyclers in Santa Clara County where he operated San Jose Recycling and Diversified Recycling Services. He also operated the Italian Gardens in San Jose. John acquired numerous other commercial and residential properties from his early days in business to the present. John Bruzzone felt blessed by the Lord and his family. He was an extremely generous man and was devoted to many organizations. He was a dedicated member of the Catholic Church, Salesians of Saint John Bosco, Italian American Federation, Sons of Italy, Elks' Lodge, Marconi Club and San Jose's Preservation Action Council. John lived an inspiring life full of energy and passion that was felt by all who knew him. He had a special place in his heart for his family and as the family Patriarch, he will be deeply missed. He is survived by his daughters, Jeanette Bruzzone of Santa Cruz, Joyce LoFranco (husband, Vince) of Felton, and son, John Bruzzone Jr. (wife, Berna) of Scotts Valley, seven grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren, and twin great-great-grandsons. His beloved granddaughter Lisa LoFranco Noya passed away before him. Services will be held at noon on Tuesday, July 6th at Holy Cross Catholic Church and a celebration of life will follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Salesian Community at St. Francis School in Watsonville, 2401 E. Lake Dr., Watsonville, CA 95076, in loving memory of John Bruzzone. My condolences to all the Bruzzone Family in the loss of their great Patriarch, John. I have many fond memories of John and Julie participating in and attending the Salesian Spring Festival in all it’s iterations over the years. Most recently, John and his daughter attended the dedication of Piazza Zanella in honor of our dear friend Br. Z., just two years ago. You can see from the pictures John looked healthy and fit for his close to ninety years. Our gratitude for his consistent love, devotion and generosity to the Salesians goes beyond words. Sr. Angelita Guzman (now in Texas) regales me often with memories of John and all the family during her long time of service at St. Francis and in Watsonville. His spirit and energy will live on in all that he touched. Thank you john.

As a student at St Francis High School I very much appreciated John's dedication and generosity towards the Salesians and towards the school. Looking back on those years I realize even more now how much personal energy and gifts he and Julie bestowed towards St John Bosco through St Francis High School. The school remains as a great memento to the Bruzzone's and others who gave of themselves. One vignette that still remains memorable for me is John and Julie working over large boiling pots of spaghetti for the high school spring festival. They personally fixed thousands of meals over the years during this event. Thanks to them and the family. Thank you John.

My prayers go out to the Bruzzone family. I had the pleasure of working at the Pied Piper Exterminators, and would see Mr. Bruzzone Sr. very frequently. I will miss his many jokes that he would tell when first coming into the office. He had a kind soul and will be truly missed by all who knew him.

My prayers go out to the Bruzzone family. I'm so glad that he came into life in 2009. John Sr. was like a grandpa to me in the short time I new him. John loved to come in my office and go thru my candy jar and find the good ones. He will be missed dearly.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Bruzzone family. It was a pleasure working for the family at The Pied Piper. I thank him for introducing me to the "Ravs" from La Villa as these have become a holiday tradition in our home. I can't go in to a See's candies without thinking of how he used to quietly walk in to the office and place a treasured box upon our desks with his smile and his twinkle in his eyes. May loving memories comfort his family during this time.

My thoughts and prayers for the Bruzzone family. My grandfather ( Stephen ) spoke fondly of John and his family. My first and only encounter with John came way to late in life, but I was grateful to have the opportunity. He will be missed.
