Joseph Axlerod Obituary

Joseph Axlerod Teacher, lover of knowledge, inveterate student, natural friend to all he encountered, died peacefully at home, September 3, 2010, at age 92, after a short illness. Born January 15, 1915, in Kingston, Massachusetts, Joe earned his PhD in Linguistics at University of Chicago, marrying Adeline Abrams in 1939. They relocated to San Francisco in 1954, where Joe taught literature and art at San Francisco State University, where he remained until his retirement in the mid 80s. Addie's death preceded Joe's by six years. At the Center for Research and Development in Higher Education, Berkeley, Dr. Axelrod authored many books, including his most important, 'The University Teacher as Artist." Always engaging, Joe encouraged countless writers and artists within the academic and arts communities and joyfully built a diverse family of colleagues, students, artists, and friends. Those touched by his unforgettable smile, generous nature and kind heart have been honored to know him. His final gesture was offering his remains to the UCSF Willed Body Program where Joe teaches still. Survivors include long-time friends, Dr. J.D. (Jian-Dong) Zhang, Hedy (He) Zhang, Rebecca Peters, Behida Dolic, Rob McCallum, Katherine (Kat) and Dr. Bernie Krause, Esther Sklar, Jack Warner, and other devoted friends and caregivers who came to love Joe dearly and became part of his family. We miss you, Joe. Contributions may be made in Joe's honor by befriending and supporting the artist of your choice. No services are planned.

Joe used to come to Primetimers, and my friend Dick and I got to know him pretty well. We used to go out for tea afterwards quite often. I will really miss him!! He was a great guy!!

We use to live in the building next to Joe and Adie and saw them take their walk every day. One day I stipped and said to them, "you are the CUTEST" couple on the block. That was the start of our wonderful frindship. We joined them for tea one day and stayed friends ever since. I will miss Joe and his sweetness, smile and kindnest. I loved all his stories and celebrating holidays and birthdays with him. He will always have a special place in my heart and we display the above photo on our refigerator to see Joe everyday!

Joe was my oldest, truest, best friend since roughly 1948 when we met at the university of chicago. Because of his temperament he was the only person I could justly call an angel. His care for Addie and all others demonstrated that.
He will be missed by all of us.

My Dearest Joe, neighbor for 18 years. It is so easy to describe you. Kind, Loving, Sweet,Caring,Humanatarian, Educated. I will never meet a loving man in my lifetime like Joe. There was always that million dollar smile on his face. When Addie was very ill, Joe took care of her like anyone I have ever seen before. He was patient, kind and always treated her like a queen. I never heard a bad word come out of Joe's mouth. Francisco Street will never be the same without Joe. He was one in a million and is surly in heaven with his Addie now. I already miss you my friend. I will never forget you. All My Love, Tina
