Joseph Smith Obituary

Joseph Warren Smith Jr. Nov. 1921 - Oct. 2010 Joe passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family. He was the loving husband of Gloria and father to Joseph III, Alex (Gretchen), Sam (Janet), Jennifer (Hugh) Grubb, Charlie (Marcela), and Carolyn (Ken) Jones. Joe was very proud of his many grandchildren and great grandchildren and he was greatly loved by them in return. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Joe was a stellar track athlete and earned an athletic scholarship to Miami University of Ohio. He served with distinction as a Sergeant in the Army during World War II while stationed at the Pentagon. After the war he received his B.A. degree at the University of Cincinnati and then achieved his Masters Degree in Education from the University of Southern California. He moved his family to northern California in the mid 1950's and served as Principal at Parkway Jr. High in South San Francisco. Joe was then promoted to Assistant Superintendent of the South San Francisco Unified School District in 1959 and served honorably in that position, for 30 years, until 1989. After retirement from the school district Joe worked in the insurance business for 10 more years and then retired permanently in 1999. An outgoing and humble man with a quick wit and an ever-present sense of humor who could tell terrific tales, Joe loved sharing stories of his family and friends' successes and accomplishments. He was also a great listener and touched countless lives, more than any of us will ever know. Joe will be missed and mourned by all who had the good fortune of knowing him. May he rest in peace. A celebration of Joe's life will be held at 12:00 noon on Saturday the 23rd day of October, at the Garden Chapel Funeral Home, 885 El Camino Real, South San Francisco, CA 94080. In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Stroke Association, www.strokeassociation.org , would be appreciated. Garden Chapel Funeral Directors (650) 583-2510

My thoughts are with you at this difficult time. Your husband/father/grandfather was a kind man. We have fond memories of him dropping by my brother's deli and sharing a laugh or two with my family. He will be missed by many.
