Linda McCausland Obituary

Linda Marie McCausland 1947-2010 Linda, a fourth-generation San Franciscan, is now at peace after a brief struggle with cancer. Linda was the beloved sister of Warren McCausland, and sister-in-law of Cathy, pre-deceased by her parents Frances and Henry McCausland; also survived by cousins in California and Oregon, and many devoted friends and colleagues. Linda attended St. Cecilia's, Mercy High School, and graduated from the University of San Francisco '69 with a Degree in History, and a Certificate in Elementary Education '70. She since served on the USF Alumni Board of Directors for six years. Linda taught First Grade for seven years at St. Monica's School, and for the past 33 years taught First Grade at Holy Name School; she was also Vice Principal the past two years. She was greatly respected by her peers, and idolized by many of her students who kept in contact after completing First Grade. One of the many acknowledgments she received in her career was an Award for Teaching Excellence from the Herbst Foundation. Linda had a huge impact on all of the people she touched and will live in their hearts forever. She loved teaching, traveling the world with friends, reading and cooking. We wish to thank the Doctors, Nurses, and staff at St. Mary's Medical Center and Pathways Home Hospice for their wonderful care of Linda during her illness. A Mass celebrating Linda's life will be held Friday, October 15th, 10am, at Holy Name Church, 39th Avenue and Lawton Street in San Francisco. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Linda's memory to either Holy Name School, 1560-40th Avenue, San Francisco, CA 94122; the University of San Francisco, File 30761, PO Box 60000, San Francisco, CA 94160-0001, or to a favorite charity.

Just received a notice for a USF reunion. Lin and Annette Anton coordinated our last reunion--or the one I remember best. I'm seriously missing them both! Lin missed our St Cecilia & Mercy reunions, too. Seems like only yesterday she called to ask us to join the effort to get colleagues to the reunion. Lin's great smile & boundless energy was so compelling. Can't imagine the USF event without her. I still look at her childhood home on 19th Ave & expect to see her there--or walking around Lake Merced! Lin's light still shines in our hearts.

Last day of 1st grade.

As I grow older I realize how much people tend to fade away. Rarely does someone stick around my mind, however Ms. McCausland seems to always pop up throughout the years and remind me of humanity's good side. Growing up I could never retain any academic information through class so by default teachers have never been part of my core memory. Linda is amongst the few in my life that have truly broken that barrier and will always be looked up as inspiration.

I was searching the internet for Linda McCausland because she was one of my favorite teachers. I'm saddened to hear she's passed on, however, reading about the many lives she touched is truly inspirational. I believe I was in one of the first classes she taught at St. Monica's, but you would never know it, she was a true pro.

I met Linda 40 years ago when she started at St. Monica's. She was a real teacher, I, a walk-on PE Teacher and coach. We worked together for about six years, when she moved on to Holy Name. She touched a lot of young lives at S.M., but she made a good move. I remember her asking me to come and speak to her class about kid stuff. I told her that most children in SF don't know about the CHP, but after some leg pulling, my sergeant allowed me to go into the "City" and give a presentation. It turned out great and a lot of the students really went to her and thanked her for them getting to sit in a patrol car, get sticker badges and just get to talk to an officer. Little did she know that she was ahead of her time in this aspect , but not long after came Adopt a Cop and Say NO to Drugs Programs. Her students at SM were always polite, and ready to go to PE. Linda, you will be missed by everyone that knew you for your devotion to children, your support of youth sports, your friendship, and last but not least, your smile:)

I was very fortunate to be in her first grade class at St.Monica and, as it turned out, it was also her last year teaching at that school. She was great with kids and was a favorite of mine. My thoughts are with her loved ones.

My prayers are with you. Linda was always one of my favorites at Holy Name. It didn't matter how long it had been since we saw each other, her smile and laughter made it seem like yesterday. May you find comfort in your memories and in the fond memories of all those she has touched.

We are so sorry to hear that Linda has passed away. She was truly a wonderful teacher and person. She always asked about the boys even after they graduated. She came to my late-husband's service and it meant so much to the family. With Love & Prayers, The Stanich-Prince Family

Miss McCausland was a one-of-kind teacher and person who made everyone she met feel special and brought out the wonderful in the children she taught. Our children were blessed to have such a positive influence in their lives and the parents were blessed so have such a caring person teaching them. A little piece of Linda lives on in all the people she influenced and we will be forever thankful for the joy she brought to all our lives.

I had the privilege to be in the first class that Miss McCausland taught at Holy Name. I remember calling her "Mommy" by accident and feeling quite embarrassed at my mistake. Miss McCausland took one look at my face and just gave me the biggest hug. I remember she had tears in her eyes. The last time I saw her was in 2001 at the last reunion, it had been 16 years since I graduated and I had my four year old in tow. She took one look at me and gave me the same type of hug that she gave me in first grade - she had tears in her eyes then too. That is only one fond memory that I have of many. Miss McCausland embodied love and kindness. I am so sad and sorry that the world has lost such a beautiful lady.

I didn't have Ms.McCausland as my teacher as I didn't start at Holy Name until the 3rd grade, but that was the beauty of her. She didn't have to teach you to know who you were. She was always there with a hug or a smile when you needed it and she always seemed to know when you did.

Missing her bright smile and great kindness. Even when we didn't see each other for years, it was as if we never parted. Great memories from St. Cecilia's, Mercy and USF. She was always so funny. Her light will never go out!

Miss Mccausland was a wonderful Teacher. She was calm and firm and the children loved her deeply. Never a unkind word and always supportive of all her students. She loved them all the same and gave them individual attention.
She had great pride in all that she did. Loyal to her students, her Principal and school.
We will miss her terribly.
God Bless.

In the short time my husband and I knew Ms. McCausland we found her to be a loving human being who devoted herself to the heart of her career... educating the youth. Her most profound statement to us was "education is not a race," a reminder that for the young to reach their potential we all must give them room and time to grow. She was truly an inspiration!

Ms. McCausland was a loving, caring and wonderful human being. We are very lucky to have had her teach both of our children. Last year, after Jasaiah's grandfather passed away, she told him, "he will always be your heart."

Ms. McCausland will always be in our hearts.

Love and prayers,
