Marguerite Couvillion Obituary

Marguerite Hook Couvillion passed peacefully from this life on November 15, 2010, in the loving care of family at her home in San Rafael, CA after a courageous battle with brain cancer. Born January 16, 1933, to Benjamin and Thelma Hook in Pierceville, Indiana, Margie was the eldest of six children. She graduated from Osgood High School in 1951, and through the cherished sponsorship of her maternal grandmother Flora Gartin, graduated from Indiana University with a BS degree in business. She began her business career as an accountant with Irwin Management Co. of Columbus, IN, and was briefly married to Robert Carroll of Florida from 1957 to 1962. Always independent and adventurous, Margie moved west, living and working in Denver, CO, a city and state fondly remembered throughout her remaining life. But California beckoned, and in 1970 she found her heart in San Francisco, happily working for Levi Strauss & Co. until her retirement in 1992. While living and working in San Francisco, Margie discovered and fell in love with neighboring Marin County. She moved to Marin where, in 1978, she met the love of her life, Richard Couvillion. Margie and Dick wed on January 1, 1982, beginning a wonderful marriage that was to last nearly three decades. After her retirement from corporate life, Margie began a passionate pursuit of her many and varied interests, including but not limited to music, books, cooking, sewing, travel and photography. Her cakes, cookies, and pies were justly famous among friends and family, and won numerous ribbons at county and state fairs. A member of the Sewing Guild, Margie loved fashion and made many of her own clothes. She was an avid reader and a dedicated member of the American Association of University Women (AAUW). Margie traveled extensively, and enjoyed yearly high school and family reunions as well as international and domestic travel with Dick. However, it was in photography that she blossomed. Inspired by the natural beauty of Marin, she discovered a hidden visual talent that long delighted friends and family via a daily email photo and her blog http://margiesdailyphoto.blogspot.com/ More than her many interests, Margie's life was about people. Her interests became venues for meeting people and making friends, and her friends were life-long. From childhood through retirement she treasured and kept in touch with an impressive list of friends & family. Margie is survived and deeply loved and missed by her husband Dick Couvillion and his three children from a previous marriage: Celeste Couvillion Bonfiglio and husband Rich of San Geronimo, along with their daughters Nina of San Rafael and Marissa of Woodacre; Marc Couvillion, wife Lori and their two daughters Madison and Kamryn, all of American Canyon; and Elyse Marie Couvillion, of Alameda. She is also survived and deeply loved and missed by her brother, sisters, nieces, nephews, and 16 great-nieces and nephews: James (Patricia) Hook of Mt. Gilead OH and their sons Andrew and Christopher; Nancy M. Bruns of Plainfield, IN; Sarah (Gerald) Webster of Indianapolis IN and Port Orange, FL and their children Timothy S. Webster, Rebecca Queener, and Deborah Maschino; Clara (Leslie) Jackman of Columbus, IN and their son Leslie Jackman Jr. A private memorial service in celebration of her wonderful spirit will take place on her birthday, January 16, 2011. I met Margie at AAUW many years ago. She was a delight to be with and I always looked for her Blue Ribbon cooking at the Marin County Fair. We shared our stories of Golden Gate Bus commuting into S.F.

I knew Marguerite through AAUW and have lovely memories of talking with her many times. I also saw her at the Terra Linda Community Center where we both took classes. I will miss her cheerfulness and quick smile. My condolences to her family.

Dick and family - I treasured my conversations with Margie through the years we shared at AAUW - she was always so warm and gracious and willing to step forward when help was needed. I will definitly be thinking of her on 1/16 - a Birthdate we shared.
