Mauricio Vela Obituary

Mauricio E. Vela A father who deeply loved his family, cherished his friends/ supporters, passed away on 10/22/10 at home, accompanied by his family. He is survived by his sons, Carlos and Edward Vela. He also leaves behind siblings Carmen, Elizabeth, Ray, Rose, Bill and many nieces and nephews. He was born in San Francisco on December 18, 1959 to Maria Vela and the late Carlos Vela. He graduated from St Paul's, Sacred Heart High School and UC Berkley. He ran the youth & senior programs at the Bernal Heights Neighborhood Center from 1989 -1999 and was Executive Director from 1999-2004. He sat on various Boards & Commission, most recently Coleman Advocates and Jamestown Community Center. He continued to provide consulting services and was the leader on recent ongoing neighborhood issues, such as "Save the Bernal Preschool" and "Save the Bernal Mural" campaigns. He has been described as "one of the great ones in the community building of San Francisco" and "a gifted organizer". He was old school; his favorites were Tower of Power, Santana and attending the Voices of Latin Rock events. He enjoyed hosting barbecues and was an avid Cal Bears, Giants & 49ers fan. His loss has been immense and the family appreciates the many condolences, from his friends in the community. He will be remembered with love and admiration. A vigil service will be held on Wednesday, October 27th, 3-9PM with rosary services at 7:00PM at Driscoll's 1465 Valencia St. A funeral mass will be held on Thursday, October 28th, 10AM at St. Paul's Church, 29th & Church Streets in San Francisco. Attendance at the Crematorium is private. A gathering will follow at the Patio Espaol Restaurant, 2850 Alemany Blvd. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in honor of Mauricio, to offset the unexpected interment expenses. From the early days of helping to shape summer employment and MYEEP to his tireless advocacy for programs for young people, Mauricio taught me how to be a good advocate and ally, getting up each day with a smile to continue the fight. Never coming from a place of anger, but of love. He is missed.

To my good friend Mauricio,
You were usually the first person I would see when I arrived at SFO. Over the past year I have been to SF four or five times and its just not the same. When I rode in BART or a taxi to the city I would sit there staring out of the window, thinking about the good times and laughs we shared ever since freshman year at SH. Although I was 3000 miles away and we saw each other infrequently we always picked up where we left off. Good bye Mauricio.

I miss my brother and still can't believe he's not with us. It's like he's been on a long vacation and I expect to see him any day. I miss seeing him at the house, eaten Moms cookin while watchin tv , walking on 30th and at our gatherings acting crazy. I think about the last few weeks we had with him and I realize just how strong he was. He was always about others. I miss my brother Moug.

Vela Family,
Having grown up right across the street from the Vela family on 30th Street, I can still remember the whole family. I am so sorry to hear about Mauricio, the last time I saw him was at the Tower of Power / War concert in San Mateo. Everytime I ever saw him, he always asked about my family and how we were doing. When I worked in the Ingleside, I ran into him a few times, he was definitley the community person to go to there. I'll miss his laughter and smile. My thoughts are also with his family, Rest In Peace my friend.

Mauricio - you are a gem. you have helped take care of our family - showing us the ropes on how to be a real San Francisco crew. Your heart, dedication and spirit was evident in everything that you did - you were there for so many folks.
Your warm smile, laugh and hugs will be sorely miss. We are in deep mourning here at the Lee-Turner household and will not easily get over your untimely passing.
I hope your journey is light and that you are free from pain and hardship.
