To my good friend Mauricio,
You were usually the first person I would see when I arrived at SFO. Over the past year I have been to SF four or five times and its just not the same. When I rode in BART or a taxi to the city I would sit there staring out of the window, thinking about the good times and laughs we shared ever since freshman year at SH. Although I was 3000 miles away and we saw each other infrequently we always picked up where we left off. Good bye Mauricio.

I miss my brother and still can't believe he's not with us. It's like he's been on a long vacation and I expect to see him any day. I miss seeing him at the house, eaten Moms cookin while watchin tv , walking on 30th and at our gatherings acting crazy. I think about the last few weeks we had with him and I realize just how strong he was. He was always about others. I miss my brother Moug.

We knew each other as kids at St. Paul's on Church St. Even then, you were friends with everyone. Thank you for teaching me how to play basketball back then. Thank you for all you did as an adult; the activism for the community, the time & friendship you offered to so many. You were an real inspiration my friend. I vividly and fondly remember my former student from his days at SH. My sibling Jaime (fellow graduate) and I often have recalled Moogie and his close Latino buddies he hung out with. He now shares in spirit, "Live Jesus in Our Hearts, Forever." From former Brother Albert.

Vela Family,
Having grown up right across the street from the Vela family on 30th Street, I can still remember the whole family. I am so sorry to hear about Mauricio, the last time I saw him was at the Tower of Power / War concert in San Mateo. Everytime I ever saw him, he always asked about my family and how we were doing. When I worked in the Ingleside, I ran into him a few times, he was definitley the community person to go to there. I'll miss his laughter and smile. My thoughts are also with his family, Rest In Peace my friend.

I will never forget Mauricio.He helped my family a lot on the case of the death of my cousin Erick Balderas.He never stopped fightin & gave us hope.He was a great person that was full of life.He saved our bernal heights mural and has helped many other people...The last time i got to see Mauricio and spend time with him was at my uncles wedding in June.He was happy,and smiling the whole time & laughin and having a great time with us.Thats the way i will remember hym.With a smile on his face...Thank you mauricio for all you did.You were a great man and im glad i got to know you.Thank you for givin my family hope&always beeing here for us.You are an angel now.Fly away...

Mauricio - you are a gem. you have helped take care of our family - showing us the ropes on how to be a real San Francisco crew. Your heart, dedication and spirit was evident in everything that you did - you were there for so many folks.

My condolences to the Vela Family. Mauricio will surely be missed since his activism touched so many people from diverse backgrounds. But when we hear about fighting for the rights of the Latinos -Mauricio's name will always be remembered because he put his heart and soul into helping those less fortunate.
