Philip Garcia Obituary

Philip F. Garcia May 23, 1945 - Nov. 25, 2010 After a long and courageous battle with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia, Philip Fredrick Garcia, 65, passed away at Kaiser Hospital in Redwood City, early Thanksgiving morning. His passing was peaceful and he was surrounded by his family. Philip was a loving and devoted father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He is survived by his son Jeffrey Garcia and daughter-in-law Kim, his daughter Yvette Shelton, his son-in-law Harold and granddaughters Emilia, Juliet, and Annaliese Shelton, his brother Ken Garcia and nieces Amy Swerdlin and Heather Cann, and his sister Sheri Bourassa, and his brother-in-law Bill, and nieces Christina and Renee. He is also survived by many loving cousins, aunts, uncles, and 2 grand nieces. Philip grew up in San Francisco, CA where he attended Most Holy Redeemer Elementary School. He was awarded his Eagle Scout honor in 1959, and then graduated from Polytechnic High School in 1964. He lived in Pleasanton and Sonoma, and then spent the last several years of his life in Half Moon Bay. After working for the United States Postal Service and Pacific Gas & Electric, Philip joined the San Francisco Fire Department in 1971. He retired as a Battalion Chief in 2000. He was a proud and dedicated firefighter. Philip loved to play golf, cook, and was an avid reader. He especially enjoyed attending his granddaughters' sporting events, plays, and listening to their stories, which always brought a smile to his face. He was kind, generous, and loving with his family and friends and he will be deeply missed. A service celebrating his life will be held on Saturday, December 11th at 11 am at St. Monica's Church in San Francisco. In lieu of flowers the family is requesting donations to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, The Hanna Boys Center, or the Peninsula Humane Society.

To the Entire Garcia Family,

I'm sorry for your loss.

Phil was a great guy-compassionate with a good sense of humor. I was fortunate to have dinner with him every once in a while when he was in Sonoma. We shared some old stories about our Dad's "Freddy and Joe", our beautiful Moms and how fortunate we were to grow up in Eureka Valley and to live in Sonoma County.
I saw him last at Mike Ferrie's funeral...he looked great but told me how ill he was. Phil was very proud of his family and his career with the SFFD.

Rest in Peace Phil.

Well old buddy I never really thought this time would come. Saw you last at the Sta. 12 luncheon and I know you enjoyed yourself. The last couple of weeks have brought back many great memories going all the way back to our days at 42 Engine. We did know how to have fun. Some of our fondest memories were with you and LeeAnn both in Palm Desert and our trip to New Orleans. Great time had by all.
Well, your healthy now and with your loved ones. One day we will all join you.
Our thoughts and support go out to all of your family, especially Yvette, Jeff, your three granddaughters, LeeAnn, Valerie, Kenny, Sheri and Bill, and Harold.
Your friends always, Gary and Irene Lavaysse

I am very sad to learn of Phil's passing. He was a good fireman and a good guy. When our paths crossed it was either at a serious fire (one in particular comes to mind where Phil's actions brought a very tough incident to a successful conclusion) or a social situation ( where Phil went out of his way to provide me with maps and directions for a family trip I was planning to Venice, Italy). Phil had a good attitude and a good heart. I will miss him. My positive thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

It was a pleasure knowing you these last few years in the desert. You left us too early. Rest in peace. Your friends,

Phil was a friend that could give Dear Abby enough material to launch a second syndication. He will be missed especially by those who enjoyed the pleasure of his company. His smile, his unscripted laugh, came from within and was nothing less than sincere and most memorable. Rest in peace Phil.
