Richard Hall Obituary

Richard Clark Hall Resident of Redwood Shores Rich Hall, age 54, passed away December 26, 2010 from complications of pneumonia and ALS. Rich was very active despite living with the limitations of ALS for the past seven years. After graduating from Amador Valley High School, where he played varsity basketball and baseball, Rich went on to UC Davis, majoring in mechanical engineering and graduating in 1979. He was a longtime employee of PG&E, most recently as a project manager in Gas T&D. Rich was an avid sports fan and a big supporter of youth sports, coaching his children's softball, basketball and soccer teams. His greatest joy in life was spending time with his family and friends. Rich was preceded in death by his parents, W. Richard Hall and Janet M. Hall of Pleasanton. He is survived by his wife, Karen; children Amy, Sara, and Spencer; brothers John Hall (Lizz) of Scotts Valley and Don Hall (Sharon) of San Jose; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 8th at 3:00 pm at Church of the Epiphany, 1839 Arroyo Avenue, San Carlos, followed by a reception at Notre Dame High School, 1540 Ralston Avenue, Belmont. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Church of the Epiphany, Notre Dame High School, Serra High School, or Forbes Norris ALS Research Center.

My deepest sympathies and prayers go to Karen, Amy, Sara, Spencer, John, Don, and other members of Rich's family. So many people were touched by Rich's unwavering kindness, generosity, and wisdom. I could always count on Rich for a warm smile and a friendly laugh in all my encounters with him at work.

It's hard to say goodbye to such a remarkable person... but we can at least celebrate his life and honor him by stepping up our acts of kindness.

Thank you Rich for the privilege of knowing you.

Dear Karen and kids.
I could just walk down the street and tell you all this but sometimes its easier to write. Rich was an amazing neighbor and friend. I will never forget his kindness when he saw me running around the neighborhood asking for help because I was late for an important meeting. He dropped everything and changed a tire for me out on the parkway, all with patience and an ever-present smile. Looking down towards your house on any given day we saw Rich either loading or unloading sports equipment from your car. His dedication to your children and their sports was amazing and we know he loved it and was so proud of them. We will all have fond memories of the many 4th of July parties where Rich was an admirable competitor in the volleyball games, and his great sense of humor at our many Christmas Progressive Dinners and gatherings. Even in the most recent years, he never missed an opportunity to compete in the many fantasy football leagues or March Madness pools that Pete created. Rich faced the limitations of his illness with such dignity and good nature. We are grateful that our children had the opportunity to know him and to see what living life to the fullest really means. Yours is an extraordinary family and you support and love for each other has made us all better people.

We hope to see many of Rich's friends at his memorial service on Saturday, January 8th at 3:00 pm at Church of the Epiphany, 1839 Arroyo Avenue, San Carlos. There is limited parking at the church, so we have arranged for parking at the nearby Central Middle School. There are two locations at the school where you can park - one off Cedar Street and the other off Arroyo Avenue. Each is approximately 1 1/2 blocks from the church. We look forward to seeing you at the service to help celebrate Rich's life!

Karen and family,
I met Rich during my freshman year at UC Davis. I was friends with his brother, Don, and Rich quickly became one of the people I looked up to. He was easy to talk to, offered great advice, was friendly to everyone he met, and a great athlete and card player. He loved his parents, his brothers, and his life. I didn't see much of Rich after we moved to Texas, but I got a chance to catch up with him last year. His spirit was as strong as ever, even if his body was failing him. He will be missed by all who knew him. I'm privileged to be able to call him my friend.

I will never forget the time we enjoyed at the A's games. Rich had a favorite burrito shop he would frequent prior to games and we all shared in the consumption experience. I'm lucky to have known him and his entire family and I will miss Rich.

Rich was the first person I met at UCD. What I great guy. I met him at Freshman orientation in July 1075 and we ended up in the same dorm. I am glad to have known him (and his brothers, Don and John) and am saddened by his passing. He was a true Chiefs fan. Sure brings back a lot of great memories. Funniest was the night we got stuck in about 5 feet of mud at Putah Creek with Mike Whyte driving Jeff Moore's 4x4 Bronco. Rich volunteered to "protect" the Bronco and the girls whiel Mike and I ahd to run back 3-4 miles to Davis in teh middle of the nite to face the wrath of Jeff Moore. Here's to Rich and "The Shaggiest Dog in the World" joke. We have all lost a good man.
