Thomas Harold Raymond Moffet July 1, 1941 - January 27, 2012 Thomas Moffet passed away at home, surrounded by the love of his wife and children on January 27, 2012, at age 70. Tom was born on July 1, 1941 in Calgary, Alberta. His grandfather delighted in the birth of Thomas Moffet the fourth. Tom was the second of four children born to Irene and Harold Moffet. The family moved to Montreal where Tom learned French and embarked on a lifelong study of languages and cultures. In 1963, he earned a B.S in Electrical Engineering from McGill University. He worked as an engineer for Schlumberger in the oil fields of Tierra del Fuego Argentina, Peru, Brazil and Colombia. In 1965, he moved to Boston, Massachusetts, to study at Harvard Business School. There he met Elizabeth Williams, the love of his life. After graduating with his MBA, Tom married Elizabeth and returned to Montreal. He started a company producing electronic equipment for recording studios and electric utilities and even installed an educational TV station in Cuba. In 1972, Tom and Elizabeth embarked on a grand adventure. They drove for six months from Paris to Sri Lanka traveling through Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India. They visited friends and had experiences that he enjoyed remembering throughout his life. From 1973 until 1978 Tom and Elizabeth lived in Panama where their two children were born. During this time Tom was the President of First Chicago Panama. The family moved to London where Tom was an investment banker for The First National Bank of Chicago. In 1983, they moved to the San Francisco bay area where Tom worked for Crocker Bank. Tom fell in love with the bay area's balance of natural beauty and cultural richness. After decades of international gallivanting, Tom had found his place. For three decades, he and Elizabeth made their home in Tiburon, California. There he cofounded the investment bank Amsterdam Pacific, LLC and continued to work internationally, particularly in Latin America. Tom was a loving husband who lived his life with an open heart and patient mind. He always supported Elizabeth. He was delighted when she practiced architecture in their early years, agreed with her choice to stay home with their small children and supported her decision to go to graduate school. Tom was also a devoted father: crafting obstacle courses for his children when young and supporting them as they grew, through swim meets, school exams and life decisions. He never missed an important moment in their lives. Tom spent his weekends as an avid athlete: skiing in Canada, Europe and Tahoe; scuba diving; sailing his sloop around the Panama Canal; running on Mount Tam and Stinson Beach; and biking throughout Marin, the Sierras, the Trinity Alps and over mountain passes in Bhutan. He reveled in studying new topics. He was fluent in French, Spanish and Portuguese and also studied Italian, Greek, Arabic, Russian, and Mandarin. He loved attending Commonwealth Club and World Affairs Council lectures. Tom relished classical music. He attended concerts around the bay area and his house would echo with the sounds of KDFC. Tom is missed by his wife Elizabeth, his children, Anne Moffet Ciranni and Tim Moffet, their spouses, Michael Ciranni and Sarah Moffet, his granddaughter Claire Ciranni, his siblings Marilyn Macfadyen, Gordon Moffet and Maureen Moffet, and numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and friends. Friends are invited to celebrate Tom's life at St. Stephen's Church, 3 Bayview Avenue, Belvedere, California, on March 3rd at 2 pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the UCSF Foundation: The Charles Ryan Research Fund, The North Bay Aquatics, or a
charity of your choice. Tom felt that the UCSF team who treated his transitional cell cancer extended his life.
