Gladys Moore Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jun. 17 to Jun. 22, 2014.
Gladys Ellen Moore born January 20, 1920 to William N. and Jane E. Thompson in San Francisco, CA. Left this earth peacefully on June 15, 2014 to be with her husband of 53 years, Robert Ford Moore (January 17, 1921-November 22, 2001), and to be welcomed by family and friends who preceded her. A wonderful mother of six children, Bruce William Moore (Eileen), Janice Eileen Moore, Brian Robert Moore, Diane Elizabeth Moore Eid (Evar), Jay Frederick Thompson Moore (Theresa) and Matthew John Moore. Also survived by 18 grandchildren: Stephanie, Stephen, Jennifer, Elliott, Rachel, Joanna, Laura, Patrick, David, Robert, Grace, Gregory, Garreth, Wylie, John, Connie, Samuel and Isabella; and 3 great-grandchildren: Saren, Morgan and Rebel; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews; brother in-law and sister-in-law Frederick and Trudy Moore and sister-in-law Mary Moore; and good friends, Bill and Kay Brachna who introduced Gladys to Bob back in 1947.

Gladys was born and raised in San Franciso's Haight-Ashbury neighborhood with sisters Martha and Mary; graduated from Polytechnic High School and earned a bachelor's degree and teaching credential from San Franciso Teachers' College (now CSUSF). She was a member of the Phi Lamda Chi Sorority and Drama Club. She served in the Red Cross during World War II and pursued her teaching profession for a few years, teaching in Corning and Pacific Grove, CA before meeting, then marrying Bob Moore on November 20, 1948; raising their six children in San Francisco and then went back to teaching for a short time in the San Francisco Unified School District and then at Bayshore School District until she retired at the age of 55 on June 12, 1975; the same day that her first of 18 grandchildren, Stephanie Marie Moore, was born. In 1985, after Bob retired from Westinghouse Elevator Company; Gladys and Bob moved to Sebastopol, CA and lived in a custom built home on 4 acres where they hosted many memorable family gatherings. It was always a fun place for the grandchildren to go and spend the night at Grandpa Bob and Grandma Gladys' house.

Gladys was a sweet, kind and loving person and was loved and admired by "most of her friends"! She had an outgoing personality that made even strangers gravitate to her. Gladys had a nickname fondly known as "Happy-Bottom" and she loved to tell everyone the story behind this name.

Gladys and Bob attended St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Cotati, CA and joined the Italian Catholic Federation where Gladys became the chapter's historian, writing many articles for the Northern California ICF newsletter. Gladys loved to model her "mother of the bride/groom" dresses in several fashion show fundraisers for St. Joseph's. She also served on Sebastopol Senior Center's board.

Gladys lived at Springlake Village Senior Community from May, 2002 until she peacefully left this earth. Our family gives sincere thanks to the dedication, diligent and gentle care given by Springlake's excellent staff to our Mom.

Donations may be made in Gladys' memory to Hanna Boys' Center, 1700 Arnold Drive, Sonoma, CA 95476 or to a charity of your choice.

Gladys would often like to give this toast while enjoying her favorite drink-a Manhattan:

"Here's to you, as good as you are. And here's to me, as bad as I am; As bad as I am, as good as you are, I am good as you are as bad as I am!"
