Anne Chatham Obituary

Anne Bassett Stanley Chatham, widow of the late Hugh Hill Chatham, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 9, 2013, in her home on Jupiter Island, in Hobe Sound, Florida. She was 92. She was the daughter of the late Virginia Governor, Thomas Bahnson Stanley and his wife, Anne Pocahontas Bassett Stanley.
Mrs. Chatham was born in 1920 in Bassett, Virginia.
Mrs. Chatham had a profound, life-long interest in horticulture. She was an honorary member of The Carmel-By-The-Sea Garden Club, in Carmel, California, which established the Anne Bassett Stanley Chatham Award for Horticulture.
She was also an accredited judge of The Garden Club of America and served as Advisor to The Horticulture Committee of The Garden Club of America. She received the Zone VIII Horticulture Award in 1988 from The Garden Club of America, served on the Scholarship Committee and on the Board of Directors for The Garden Club of America.
Mrs. Chatham was keenly aware of the global tragedy of the dwindling rainforests and the eventual extinction of the medicinal botanical treasures that lie within. Mrs. Chatham established The Anne S. Chatham Fellowship in Medicinal Botany to enable study on the PhD level for endangered species plants that may preserve and/or save lives.
She served as Counselor of the Robert E. Lee Memorial Association for the Stratford Great House in Stratford, Virginia.
Mrs. Chatham possessed a keen interest in interior design, and at the age of 70 earned her certification as a member of the American Society of Interior Designers. She was a former Director of the Stanley Furniture Company, and a Director of the hotel management company, Chatmar, Inc., in Monterey, California.
Mrs. Chatham is survived by three of her four sons: Hugh Hill Chatham Jr., Richard Stanley Chatham, and Robert Bahnson Chatham. She is predeceased by her son, David Crockett Chatham, who passed away in 2006. She is also survived by ten grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. As devoted matriarch of the family for many years she will be missed and remembered lovingly for her strength, vision, vivacity and love of her family.
The Chatham family will be forever grateful to the exceptional team of compassionate caregivers who tended to Mrs. Chatham in recent years.
Funeral services will take place on February 1, 2013 at 4:00 P.M. at Christ Memorial Chapel on Jupiter Island. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mrs. Chatham's memory to your local Alzheimer's Association.

What happy memories we Lipford sisters have of growing up next door to the Chatham boys and of Anne's warm hospitality and generosity. I remember her making all the flower arrangements for our grandparents' 50th anniversary party -- and then for our Daddy's funeral luncheon 40 years later. Such faithful lifelong friends are rare.
Our sympathy and love to Hugh, Stan, Rob and their families.
