Richard Johnson Obituary

Richard Johnson

Also known as Dick, age 71, passed away peacefully in his Tiburon home on April 17, 2014 from malignant melanoma.


Dick was born in Oak Park, Illinois in 1942 to parents Ralph and Eleanor Johnson.  He graduated from Evanston Township High School in 1960, Stanford University with a B.S. in Mathematics in 1964, and Harvard Law School with a J.D. in 1967.  After law school, he moved to San Francisco to clerk for the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.  He worked as a lawyer at Feldman, Waldman, & Kline for five years before joining Warren Saltzman's practice in 1974 specializing in Employee Benefits Law.  He became managing partner in 1988 at Saltzman & Johnson.


In 1972, he married Andrea Louie in Sausalito, California.  They moved to Tiburon in 1976 where they raised three children.


Dick was a kind and beloved man who loved to play golf and travel.  He was proud to have visited all fifty states and five of the seven continents.  Dick had many lifelong friends, including people from his days growing up on the Evanston "Back Lot," to his KA fraternity brothers at Stanford, to colleagues from his early professional years in San Francisco, along with many family friends in Tiburon. 


Dick was a passionate Bay Area sports fan and longtime Stanford Cardinal football season ticket holder.


He is survived by his wife, his three children, Gregory (Cindy), Kimberly Marar (Devan), and Stephanie, his mother, Eleanor, and brother, Steve (Judy). He is predeceased by his father, Ralph, and sister, Virginia.


A service will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church at 240 Tiburon Blvd, Tiburon on April 24, 2014 at 2pm.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made In Memory of Richard Johnson, UCSF Foundation, Melanoma Oncology Fund, Lock Box 45339, San Francisco, CA 94145-0339.
