Ralph Spinelli Obituary

Ralph A. Spinelli

Ralph Spinelli, born in Vallejo on December 14, 1940, passed away August 21st after an ongoing battle with cancer. Son of Ralph A. Spinelli, Sr. (deceased) and Muriel (Cassenelli) Pfleiger, brother of Lynda, Cherie, Jessica, and Neil. Ralph grew up in Vallejo, spending his life throughout California, Oregon, and Nevada. Ralph is survived by his two sons, Tony and Chris, and his grandchildren, Sofia and Enzo.
Ralph was known for his engaging personality, his joyous sense of humor, and his pride of his family. He had a passion for life, for Italian culture, sports, and cars. He was fortunate in his life to enjoy many incredible experiences, but none brought him more joy than the time he spent with his family.
Ralph spent his early career working in the restaurant business, owning and operating establishments throughout Northern California, Nevada, and Oregon. Later in life, he went on to found his own restaurant consulting company, working to support operators large and small.
Ralph's life was interrupted, but not defined, by two separate incarcerations. During his third act, he dedicated his life to education, earning his BA from University of San Francisco, his MFA from St. Mary's, and was earning his Doctorate from University of California. Drawing on his life experiences, Ralph became heavily involved in writing and prison reform, and became a published author on the topic. His dedication to his craft afforded him opportunities to engage and influence many policy makers, educators, and students alike, and will shape lives for years to come.
For those who knew him, he will be remembered for his pride, his passion, and his personality. An outgoing man with lots to give, he will be dearly missed by his immediate and extended family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests any donations be made to the American Cancer Society.

I believe he was a brave man to come forward with information about a case that I'm guessing he would have rather have kept to himself but didn't. With no promise of early release, he came forth. Even after he was free, he told the same story with nothing to gain at that point and I have no reason to doubt him. I will never forget him for that. As well as his story of Leigh busting down his door in his youth, even though I never heard the full story, I really hope to hear it someday...

Ralph Spinelli was a man who stood up... when he had to.

Knew your dad, Ralph Sr., and he was a great person and good friend. Looks like some rubbed off. R.I.P.
