Werner Gleitzman Obituary

Werner M. Gleitzman

October 16, 1929 to December 19, 2015

Werner Gleitzman died on December 19, from complications of pneumonia. He was born in Berlin Germany, to Max and Lillian Gleitzman, The family had to flee Hitler's Germany, and after a seven year struggle, managed to get permission to come to America. They settled in San Francisco, where they started a wholesale hosiery business, and Werner and his sister, Marion grew up.
Werner attended Grant Elementary, Wilkins High School and the Philadelphia Textile Institute. He was affiliated with Temple Emanu-El and an over 50 year member of the Concordia Club.After his father's death he moved back to San Francisco, and entered the family business as a salesman. He made friends of many of his clients. He worked there for 35 years, until 1987, when the business, which his sister had managed, had to be liquidated, due to union problems.Werner retired for three days, but could not stand the inactivity, so he started looking for a job.One of his former clients was looking for someone just like him, and he started working for the Irving Variety Store, where he worked for another 24 years. Werner was predeceased by his dad, Max and mother, Lillian, also by grandparents, uncles, aunts and cousins, who perished in the Holocaust. He is survived by his sister, Marion Bacciocco.According to his wishes, there will be no formal service. He donated his body to science at U.C.S.F.
