Dorothy Pechman Rice

June 11, 1922 - February 25, 2017

Dorothy Rice – age 94 – died on February 25 from complications resulting from a fall. Born in Brooklyn, NY, she received a Bachelor's degree in Economics from the Univ. of Wisconsin in 1941 and later, an honorary Doctorate of Science from the College of Medicine and Dentistry in New Jersey. Dr. Rice conducted groundbreaking research on the economic value of life and the cost of disease, including heart disease, cancer, and smoking. She was author of more than 250 books, articles, chapters, and monographs and was considered a vital mentor to many – particularly young women economists. Dr. Rice oversaw and augmented key national health statistics data sets. Positions held include: Deputy Assistant Commission of Social Security (1972-6); Director, National Center for Health Statistics (1976-82); Professor and Professor Emerita, UC San Francisco (1982-2017). Her husband of 62 years, John Donald (Jim) Rice, died in 2005. She is survived by three sons (Kenneth, Donald, and Thomas) and four grandchildren (Morgan, Clara, Daniel, and Alana). Contributions in memory of Dorothy may be made to: University of California, San Francisco Foundation to be used by the Dorothy Pechman Rice Center for Health Economics; Americans for Nonsmokers' Rights; or Health Access Foundation.
