Daniel O'Connell Obituary

Daniel O'Connell Daniel Joseph O'Connell passed away December 21, 2010 In Long Beach. Born on June 19, 1922 in County Cavan, Ireland to Daniel and Mariam O'Connell. Daniel was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia, his sister and brother-in-law, Brendan and Maureen Wynne of Paso Robles, brothers-in-law, Robert Naughton and John Nurre. Survived by his children, Daniel Patrick (Tina) of Dupont, WA, Kathleen (Phillip Dostalek) of Long Beach, Brian (Kim) of Long Beach, Mary (Chris Breemer) of Portland OR; and the 9 grandchildren who so amused him: Kyle, Daniel Ross, Kevin, Katie, Trevor, Andrew, Molly, Shea, Rory. Also survived by dear sisters, Roisin Naughton of San Diego and Dympna Nurre of Oakland; and 18 loving nieces and nephews. Daniel was educated at St. Patrick's College in Cavan and arrived in California in 1949 where he took up carpentry and obtained his general contractor's license, engaging in both residential and commercial building construction. He enjoyed gardening, reading, poetry and the company of his sisters and large extended family. He will be forever remembered for his kindness, compassion, charm, intellect and clever Irish wit. He had an extraordinary love for his children, and was deeply, but modestly proud of them. He leaves us with many fond memories that will be recounted with amusement for years to come. Visitation will be Monday, December 27 from 3 - 7 p.m. with prayers at 5 p.m., at the home of his daughter, 6430 Mantova Street, Long Beach. A funeral Mass celebrating his life will be held Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Church, 6200 E. Willow Street, Long Beach. Interment will follow at All Souls Catholic Cemetery, 4400 Cherry Ave., Long Beach. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Habitat for Humanity.
