ABRAHAM LASKAVY Obituary

A resident of Laguna Woods, passed away on September 15, 2010. He is survived by his son, Michael (Carrie); grandson, Matthew; daughters, Rebecca Loza (Bob) and Amy Laskavy (John Piccirilli); his sister, Naomi Camnitz and her husband, Martin, of Kinston, North Carolina; and his companion of 12 years, Lucy Shimon. Howard was born in New York City on April 22, 1928. He served in the Army in both WWII and the Korean War. In 1954 he moved to Los Angeles, where he met and married Miriam Baskin in 1956. Miriam passed away in 1996, after 40 years of marriage. Howard worked in the newspaper business for over 35 years, including 29 years at the Glendale News-Press as an advertising salesman and then as a manager and auto editor; and later worked for the Los Angeles Times until his retirement in 1994. He loved antique automobiles and owned many vintage cars, and was also an avid collector of antique firearms and swords, specifically Civil War pieces. He was a member and benefactor of the National Rifle Association and was active in several gun clubs. Howard was also a proud benefactor of the Civil War Preservation Trust in Washington, D.C., and the D-Day and Civil War Museums in New Orleans. Howard met Lucy Shimon in a bereavement group after Miriam's passing, and they enjoyed many years of traveling together, including to numerous Civil War sites. He served as a volunteer at Kaiser Permanente for the last 13 years, and spent the last 3-1/2 years living in beautiful Laguna Woods with Lucy. Howard was hardworking, and a devoted father, grandfather, brother, husband and companion. He will be greatly missed by family, friends and colleagues. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations made in Howard's memory to the Civil War Preservation Trust, 1156 15th St., NW, Suite 900, Washington, D.C. 20005.
