Elma Ougland Obituary

Elma Marie (Bourgeois) Ougland Elma Marie (Bourgeois) Ougland passed away in her home Saturday, December 25, 2010 at home surrounded by her loving children. Elma had resided in the Westside of Long Beach since 1948 and faithfully attended Mass at St. Lucy or St. Barnabas until her 96th birthday. Elma was born in Vacherie, Louisiana on 23 April 1914. Elma is a true Cajun whose ancestors migrated from Acadia (now Nova Scotia) in the 1700s after the British expelled the French from Acadia. Elma met her husband while she was working at a cafe in Algiers across the Mississippi River from New Orleans. Sigurd A. Ougland was a second mate in the Merchant Marines. Sigurd's ship, the SS Larry Doheny, was in dry dock in Algiers. They were married within six weeks of meeting on 24 August 1938. Sigurd's ship sailed to California and Elma drove from New Orleans to San Pedro in June 1939 to be with her husband Sigurd. This was very daring for a 25 year old woman who was pregnant at the time as there was no interstate highway. Elma is survived by her three children, Betty Ann, Mary Jane (Nick Ciccone) and Erik; four grandchildren, Anthony, Thomas (Maile) Ciccone, Andrew (Amelia) Ciccone and Lori (Sym) Brazfield; seven great grandchildren, Nicolas, Erik, Samuel, Marc, Claire, Christopher and Andrew; sisters Alice Kraemer and Elvine Ovella and brother, Edward Bourgeois who all reside in Louisiana. Her husband, Capt. Sigurd A. Ougland preceded her in death in 1967. The funeral services will take place on Friday, 31 December 2010. Visitation and Rosary will be at 8:00 AM, and the Mass of a Christian Burial at 9:00 AM at the All Souls Mortuary Chapel, 4400 Cherry Ave., Long Beach with interment to follow at All Souls Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please send a donation to the charity of your choice or to: Carmelite Sisters Mt Carmel Retreat Center, 17862 Queensglen Ave., Palmdale, CA 93591-3312.
