Evelyn English Obituary

In Celebration of EVELYN ENGLISH Sept. 26, 1915 - Nov. 22, 2010 Evelyn Semenza Honts English has passed away at age 95. A devoted teacher, patron of the arts, and indefatigable member of The Fine Arts Club of Pasadena, she never outgrew her interests in the arts, dancing, reading, bridge, theatre, and travel. Evelyn was born in Reno, Nevada, graduated from the University of Nevada/Reno in 1936, and started her career teaching elementary school in Henderson, Nevada. Later she established The Semenza Family Scholarship Endowment at the University of Nevada/Reno in honor of her parents John and Louise, two older brothers Lawrence and Edwin and three older sisters Nevada, Rena and Grace, all of whom graduated from the University of Nevada/Reno with honors. Her first marriage to First Lieutenant George William Honts, Christmas Eve 1942, was cut short by his death from German gunfire along the Rhine River just two days before the end of World War II. His poignant love letters form the basis of a song cycle for voice and piano, Vignettes: Letters from George to Evelyn; from the Private Papers of a World War II Bride. Elizabeth Samson, Mary Ann Paullin, and Mary Ann Shemdin accompanied Evelyn to the premier in the summer of 2002 at the Tanglewood Summer Music Festival in Lenox, Massachusetts. The premiere was sung by Stacie Horlick, soprano, and played by the composer, Dr. Alan Louis Smith who is a Fine Arts Club Honorary Member, USC Chair of Keyboard Studies, and Tanglewood Vocal and Piano Director. The letters and song cycle are archived at The Dwight Eisenhower Presidential Library in Abilene, Kansas. During World War II, Evelyn served as Director of the U.S. Army Special Services, now the USO. Soon after the war ended, she moved to Berlin, where she organized entertainment for the American troops. In the early 1950s, Evelyn moved to Southern California for a career in public relations and marketing. Instead she returned to teaching in the late 1950s after earning her Masters Degree in Education. She taught for over 30 years in the Pasadena public schools. In 1958, Evelyn married Lawrence "Larry" Samuel English. Both Evelyn and Larry passionately supported the arts. They joined The Fine Arts Club in 1989, taking particular interest in supporting young, gifted visual and performing arts students. Even after Larry's death in 1998, Evelyn maintained her commitment to the Club. She gave over $50,000 to The Awards Endowment and The Operating Endowment, as well as underwriting numerous dinner programs. She served as Member of the Board of Directors, Program Chair, Performing Arts Award Chair, Support Group Fundraising Chair, and participated in numerous Fine Arts Club committees. She continued her extraordinary support of theater and music with donations to Theatre Americana, the Pasadena Playhouse, the Pasadena Symphony and the Pasadena Opera Guild. She was a charter member of the Pasadena Arts Council and portrayed Queen Elizabeth I for their Gold Crown Awards Banquet at the Civic Auditorium in 2000. Evelyn was also active with the Gamble House, the Pacific Asia Museum and Pi Beta Phi. In late 2001, she had a non-speaking appearance in Frasier. Evelyn is survived by her stepson, Dennis English, and his wife Jan, of Hoboken, NJ; her stepdaughter, Carol English Miller, and step-grandsons, Ryan and Brent, of San Diego, CA; as well as a niece and nephews. Memorial Contributions in Evelyn's memory may be sent to The Fine Arts Club of Pasadena, c/o Mr. Norman R. Sarafian, 5109 Gould Avenue, La Canada, CA 91011-2441. Make checks payable to The Fine Arts Club of Pasadena, with "The English Operating Endowment" in the memo line. Contributions are tax-deductible. A memorial service will be held twelve-noon, Saturday, January 22, 2011 at Saint Andrew Catholic Church, 311 North Raymond Avenue, Pasadena, CA 91103. Monsignor Tobias English, Pastor Emeritus of Saint Andrew and cousin of Evelyn's husband Lawrence English, will officiate.

Mrs. English was my 4th grade teacher. She was my favorite teacher and I have often told my husband and daughters about the warmth she projected and the interesting activities we did in her class.

Mrs. English cared deeply for the children and their families. I will always remember how in the late 1960s, when my mother was terminally ill, Mrs. English showed such compassion to me and my brother and helped us through that difficult time.

I last spoke with Mrs. English when I called her 10 years ago, just to tell her what she had meant to me in Elementary School. As soon as she heard my name she remembered me, asked about my family, and commented on a certain costume that I had worn in our 4th grade play. She was so happy to hear that, due to her influence on me, I had also become a teacher.

In my mind, Mrs. English's legacy as a teacher is that she valued, respected and encouraged each child as an individual. Every day of 4th grade I knew that my teacher believed in me, so, in turn, I believed in myself. What a gift to give a child!

I loved Mrs. English and will cherish my 4th grade class picture (in our 1967 clothes!) with all of us standing tall and our teacher looking so proud of all of us. I can still hear her distictive voice.

Mrs. English's loving heart will live on through the thousands of children whose lives she touched and mind's she expanded.

Thank you, Mrs. English, for being part of my life.

Evelyn English was also my fourth grade teacher. Even though it was so long ago, I still remember her big smile and love for us kids. Even the naughty ones! Though I haven't seen her since I was 9 years old, I have never forgotten her and how much I loved being in her class! I will be praying for her good friends and family, as they are grieving this great loss.

Mrs. English was my fourth grade teacher. Because of her, I became a teacher. Because of her, I majored in and value the the arts. I am very sorry for our loss of Evelyn English. I now teach at an international school in Tbilisi, Georgia but since I have family in So. Calif. I have been able to see her as recently as last summer, when she could still recall individual students in my class from nearly 50 years ago. I will miss so much about her, but especially her unforgettable and rich voice (hearing it always took me right back to 4th grade). I will miss her enthusiasm, support and interest. She made me feel wonderful as a 10 year old when she read aloud to our class. Throughout her life, she embraced every moment. The last time we spoke was on Sept. 26th, her 95th birthday, and she had a busy day planned. So, after I called recently and only heard an answering machine which I'd never heard before, I became worried. We have lost a wonderful human being. I only hope that I can inspire my students a fraction of how she inspired hers. I will never forget her. My humbling condolences to Dennis, Jan, Carol, Ryan, Brent, and the rest of her family, as well as to the Pasadena Arts Council for your loss.

To the family of Evelyn English. Back in the 1950's I lived next door to Evelyn and Larry in Altadena, along with my parents(Ernie & Ruth Smith),and my brother & sister. You couldn't ask for better neighbors than Evelyn & Larry. Evelyn was always a very classy lady which I enjoyed keeping in contact over the years. I feel fortunate to have known Evelyn and send my condolences to all of her family. Ernie Smith, Jr. (Salinas, CA)

I had the honor and privilege of knowing Evelyn through the Pasadena Alumnae Club of Pi Beta Phi...what a lovely, colorful woman. I will miss our talks. I send my sympathies to her family. I will honor Evelyn by keeping her spirit alive through Pi Phi and the arts she so loved.
