known as Charlie since World War II, was born Dec. 23, 1923 in Cloquet, MN, and died in Claremont, CA Sept. 27, 2010. He was the last surviving child of Axsel and Laura Sather. Axsel immigrated from Norway with his father Bernt Kristian Saeter in 1907. Charlie enlisted, after finishing high school in the Army Air Corps as a mechanic. During WWII he began corresponding with Marian Louise Murray through a pen pal program. After the war they were married in Cloquet on Sept. 9, 1945, and had their first son, Charles Paul in 1946. They moved to Norco, California in 1947 to get out of the cold and, at the suggestion of his father-in-law, Charlie joined the California Department of Corrections in 1948. In 1949 Martin Lee, the second son, was born, followed by son #3 Eric Don in 1953. From 1958 to 1966 Charlie was in charge of a State Conservation Camp in San Diego County. He returned to the main institution at Chino in 1966, and ran the camp program until his retirement in December of 1979. In retirement he and Marian were active in the Upland First Christian Church, and he used his carpentry skills to build many projects for friends and relatives. He and Marian had just celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. Memorial Services will be held Thursday, October 14, 2010 at 2PM, at Romana Ave. Christian Church, La Verne.
