GEORGE STAVROS

73, a retired professor of English at California State Polytechnic University in Pomona, Cal., died September 22 at his home in Pomona. A native of Easton, Pa., he was the son of the late William and Demetra Stavros. He graduated from Wilson High School in 1955 and from Lafayette College in 1959. He earned a masters degree with honors from Columbia University in 1964 and a Ph,D from the University of Wisconsin in Madison in 1972 and served as an instructor of English at Green Bay. He taught at Cal Poly, Pomona from 1971 until he retired in June 2002. He served as Chair of the Dept. of English from July 1995 until September 1997. He was honored as an outstanding academic advisor by the College of Letters, Arts and Social Sciences and he continued to teach for three quarters until 2005. He is survived by a brother Peter of West Chester Pa; a sister, Marianne Mylonas, of Springfield, Pa; a nephew, Peter Mylonas; a great niece and great nephews, also of Pennsylvania, and cousins in Virginia and Florida. His funeral service will be 11 am Tuesday, at the Hellenic Orthodox Church of the Annunciation 20th St and Hay Terrace, Easton, Pa. viewing one hour prior to service in church.
