Joanie Haskell Obituary

b HASKELL-Joanie Taufenbach Haskell, age 80, passed away peacefully in Pasadena the evening of October 4th, 2010 with her two children at her side. Joanie was born May 20, 1930 to Les and Helen Briscoe Taufenbach in Pasadena, where she lived throughout her life. She had one older and adored sister, Carolyn, who predeceased her in 1997. Joanie attended Pasadena's Westridge School for Girls and was President of the Athletic Association as one of the school's top all-around athletes. Following graduation in 1947, she served as (the one and only) alumni class representative for the next 63 years until her passing. In 2008, Westridge School honored Joanie with The Mary Lowther Ranney Distinguished Alumna Award. In addition, the school will be re-titling its annual Contributions to Athletics Award in her name. Joanie attended the University of Redlands and the University of Arizona before marrying Schuyler A. Haskell of Pasadena in 1950. She was an avid sports enthusiast, primarily golf and tennis, and a true song and dance gal, excelling in tap dancing (in striking contrast, she could throw a baseball "like a guy"). Joanie received her real estate license in 1978 and served the communities of San Marino and Pasadena until her retirement in 2005. She was a former member of both the Pasadena Junior League and the Pasadena Art Alliance, and was a dedicated supporter of the Pasadena Guild of Children's Hospital. Following her marriage of 30 years, Joanie enjoyed 15 glorious years with Bill Solani of San Marino until his passing in 1998, including travels on People-to-People tennis tours in Europe and Asia. Joanie is survived by her two children, Sarah Haskell Greene and Coburn Haskell, three grandchildren, Evan, Schuyler and Ryan Haskell, two nieces, Leslie Scherer and Katie Bernard of North San Diego Country, and a nephew, Blake Thomas, of Tacoma, Washington. A memorial service will be held at All Saints Church in Pasadena at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, October 22, 2010. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in her memory to the Westridge School for Girls Annual Fund, 324 Madeline Drive, Pasadena, 91105.

Joanie was a real kick to be with. A wonderful and gracious host, she always made me feel welcome and included at her magical St. Malo retreat. My deepest condolences to Sarah, Cobe and family.

I remember Joan as a warm and no nonsense woman who was probably my first crush as an eight year old... her Saturday silver dollar pancakes and a kiss on the forehead goodnight on overnights at Coby's will remain in memory as early childhood joys...goodbye to a strong, beautiful spirit
