James was a member of ABATE and HOG. He was a Commissioner for the Sanitary District in the Town of Lyndon. He was a volunteer caretaker of a Town of Lyndon nature park near his home and had been a volunteer janitor at the new Town of Lyndon Hall.

Grandchildren Ryan and Ehrika Larson, and Charissa Zibolski, all of Milwaukee, Nicole and Katie Richart, both of Plymouth, and Dominic Weigel, Howards Grove, and a great-grandson, Jayden Zibolski.
