As a teacher, music instructor and fellow musician Mr. Lampkin was instrumental in my journey as a young man. His leadership and encouragement guided many of us in the community. Major (his father) was a longtime family friend of my grandfather, Aubrey Angel. My thoughts and prayers are with your family and may the Lord give you strength at this time.

Good better best, never let it rest, until good is better and better is best. Dr. Lamp gave his best as he led us to become the 1966-1967 Booker T. Washington Louisiana State Championship Band whose performance was adjudicated 99.9 out of 100 points. He insisted that each band member give their best. He was demanding and caring. I am grateful for the pursuit of excellence he instilled in me. One of the blessings from God I count in my life is that I had the privilege of being taught by Dr. Lampkins. Students all called him Lampand so I say, Thanks Lamp, you were the best.

May the Lord our God hold you family in the palm of His hand as you travel this road of grief. Mr. Lampkins was my band director at BTW High School in the late 60s. The class of 67 will truly miss him. He was the best band director and music teacher ever. Now Heaven has another musician in the choir

The Final Salute

Brothers in Arms, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged Hand Salutes as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This Hand Salute is the last that we shall render to Ernest Harold Lampkins our Brother-in-Arms. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Ernest. To Ernest it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the devoted and selfless service he rendered to his country while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. Ernest, we commend you for your honorable service and for your many years of service as a musical educator and as the Mayor of Greenwood. You are a true patriot, who served with honor and distinction. You upheld the finest qualities of an American patriot warrior: courage, commitment, generosity, sacrifice, love and devotion to family and country. You were a true friend. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at Ease. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of the 961 military veteran Legionnaires of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion and the 233 veterans of VFW Post 2238 in Shreveport, Louisiana, we extend our sympathies and our condolences to Ernest's family and loved ones.
