Dallas attended local grammar schools and graduated from Fair Park High School in 1941. At Fair Park, he played on the baseball team and was President of the Hi-Y and Captain Adjutant of the R.O.T.C. In May of 1941, Dallas was employed at Arkansas Fuel Oil where he played fast pitch softball for the state Champions Cities Service Softball Team. On April 15, 1942, he went to work for the Shreveport Fire Department as a Firefighter on #1 Pump at Central Station.

In August of 1943, he entered the armed services where he was assigned to the 2052d Engineer Battalion Fire Fighting platoon at which time he was promoted to sergeant. Dallas served in this capacity in England and France. In June of 1945, he was transferred to the 455th Air Services Brigade and was promoted to First Sergeant.

Returning to the United States, he was honorably discharged in November of 1945 and returned to work with the Shreveport Fire Department on #1 pump at Central Station. On October 4th 1947, he married Alice Whittington and two years later on October 11, 1949 they welcomed a daughter named Valerie, the love of their life. After retirement, Chief Greene volunteered his talents and time with several local and state agencies including the Office of Emergency Preparedness, Caddo Council on Aging, Caddo/Shreveport Crimestoppers.

Chief often said the best part of his retirement was spending time with Alice and their family. Valerie Rockett, her husband David (Roc) and their three grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

"We played together, went to church together, took trips, vacations, cruises and were a great big happy family with lots of love and laughter."

In 2004, at the recommendation of Fire Chief Kelvin Cochran and Mayor Keith Hightower, Rep. Cedric Glover sponsored a bill to name the Central Fire Station of Shreveport the Dallas W. Greene Jr. Central Fire Station. The station was opened and dedicated in June of 2004.

Chief Greene was an inspiration to anyone who ever served on the Shreveport Fire Department. He was a great man that I first met when I was little and my Dad was a Shreveport Firefighter. Years later, I too joined the fire department for a brief time. I ran into Chief Greene a few years back. His health wasn't that great and he didn't seem to be able to see. I knew he wouldn't remember who I was but I approached him anyway, took his hand and said "Hi Chief". He had to ask who it was and I told him my name. Without even a hesitation, he said "OH, Hi Mike, How's your dad?". That meant a lot to me that he remembered who we were after all those years. He truly cared. He'll be missed greatly.

We have suffered a great loss. I know he's in heaven with my daddy talking about old times & softball. Loved him m to death. Chief you will be missed

I worked for Chief Greene in 1989 as a clerk, and he was a complete joy to be around. He would nickname me on any given day depending on what I looked like...if I wore my purple outfit he'd call me Urple...if my hair was crimped he'd call me Pocahontas...mainly cause of the bleached hair he called me blondie. He came in every morning whistling and singing Hank Williams, Sr. song "There's a Tear in my beer". I use to beg him to learn a new song. He was a very kind sweet soul...may he rest in the peace of Christ. Tess Turner

Although i only saw Chief Greene a handful of times growing up, he and my dad were friends. My dad always said there wasn't a finer man on this earth than Dallas Greene. May God wrap his loving arms around the family and give them comfort during these difficult days.

I meet Chief Greene in 1963 when he and his team of fire fighters came to my aid when lighting struck our house and started a fire. He made a great impression that day. I shall always remember his kindness and gentle ways.

Chief Greene was a great friend to my family and the best Fire Chief ever. There will never be another Fire Chief like Dallas. My father and he were great friends and worked together for years. I have so many memories of him growing up with the fire department and the American Legion. We love and will miss you.

January 13, 2016

My dad worked with Chief Greene and I was fortunate enough to work with him also. My uncle, Billy Greene often told me of some things Chief Greene had done when they was younger. There has been several Chiefs since he retired but there will only be ONE CHIEF of the SFD. He was not only my Chief he was my friend. FIREFIGHTERS ARE A BROTHERHOOD. REST IN PEACE MY BROTHER. I've known Chief Greene since I was a little girl growing up in Hyde Park. He and Valerie would stop by our house when they rode their bicycles through the neighborhood. I then worked for him one summer as his assistant secretary after high school, and he later hired my husband as a firefighter. He was one of the most admirable men I have ever had the privilege of knowing. He has left a wonderful legacy for his family. RIP Chief Greene and God bless.
