Judge Charles B. Peatross

Judge Charles Brinkmann Peatross of Shreveport, Louisiana passed away on January 28, 2015. A memorial service celebrating his life was held at 11 AM on Saturday January 31, 2015 at First United Methodist Church with Dr. Pat Day officiating. A visitation was held from 5:00 to 7:00 pm on Friday January 30th at Osborn Funeral Home.

Charles was born on May 27th, 1940 in Shreveport, Louisiana and graduated from C.E. Byrd High School in 1958. He attended Tulane University and was a member of SAE fraternity. He received a B.B.A. degree in 1963 and a Juris Doctor degree from Tulane Law School in 1964. He married Betsy Chandler Peatross in 1962.

Affectionately known as "Brinky" to his grandchildren he enjoyed running and exercising at the downtown YMCA, vacationing with his family and friends, reading good books, and spending time with his dogs (too many to name). Charles loved a good joke and was at ease with an often self-deprecating sense of humor.

He clerked for the Second Circuit Court of Appeal from August of 1965 until August of 1966 and then went on to practice law at Wilkinson, Carmody and Peatross until 1970. He continued to practice law as the Senior Partner of the law firm of Peatross, Greer and Hayter and the successor firm Peatross, Greer and Frazier until 1996. Charles was elected as an appellate judge to the Second Circuit Court of Appeal in 1996 and then again, without opposition, in 2002.

He served as President of the Second Circuit Judges Association and President of the Shreveport Bar Association. He was admitted to practice in Louisiana and Colorado. He was Shreveport city attorney. He was elected as a member of the first Shreveport City Council under Shreveport's present form of city government and served as its chairman in 1982. He has served as the Louisiana State Chairman for the National Institute of Law Officers. He was a member and past president of the Shreveport Bar Association and also a member of the Colorado Bar Association. He served for 20 years as a member of the House of Delegates of the Louisiana Bar Association. He was selected by the Louisiana Supreme Court as a member of the Mandatory Continuing Legal Education Committee. Charles served as officer or director of numerous civic organizations including Chairman of the Shreveport-Bossier YMCA, Director of the Northwest Louisiana Chapter of the American Red Cross and a Director of the Shreveport Chamber of Commerce.

He was predeceased in death by his parents, Sydney Kerley Peatross and Margaret Brinkmann Peatross and is survived by his wife, Betsy Chandler Peatross and three children; Christopher Sydney Peatross and his wife Beverly Jane, Ashley Peatross Sanders and her husband Troy, and Allison Peatross Walsh and her husband Patrick. He is also survived by his brother, William C. Peatross and 11 grandchildren: Mackenzie, Brooke, Peyton and Summer Sanders, Kayla King, Chandler, Audrey, Charlie and Swift Peatross, and Alissa and Adam Walsh.

Honorary Pallbearers were Leon Bain, Jim Campbell, Alvin Childs, Jeff Cole, John Frazier, Ed Greer, Charles Grubb, C.P. Herrington, Dr. Buddy Jones, Scott Lawrence, Dr. Clint McAlister, Peyton Moore, Larry Phillips, Gordon Rountree, Dr. Bill Sanders and John Scotto.

I've long lived away from Shreveport and just learned of Charles' passing. I came to know Charles in the late 1970s-early 1980s when he was serving on the Shreveport City Council and I was a reporter for The Shreveport Times. I'll always remember Charles as a man of outstanding character, capability, and kind consideration of others. He enriched my life and, I'm confident, the lives of countless other fortunate people.

Shreveport has lost one of it's finest leaders. Although I was not born and raised in Shreveport, Charles always made me feel "at home" when working on the many projects we shared. I have never met a more sincere, honest human being than Charles.
